iPod 5G Hard Drive Clicking, not starting...

So, I tried to connect m iPod to sync new music, and the hard drive started clicking. The Apple logo shows up, then shuts off and constantly restarts. I can boot into Disk Mode, but the computer doesn't even recognize it and iTunes crashes every time I connect it. I read somewhere to try restarting my computer...and now my computer won't boot into Windows, normally or through safe mode, it just stalls during startup. As a result, I have to reinstall Windows, but luckily I had backed up all but 2 songs yesterday on to a portable drive, so that's okay.

My question is, is my iPod done? And has this happened to anyone else (the Windows crash)? I'm hesitant to even try and sync it with my laptop for fear that something will happen to it's OS too...thanks! Sorry for the long-winded post

Sounds like you need a new hard drive in the Ipod.

I second what Reima wrote. I had the hard drive in my old trusty Creative Zen Touch die a few years ago (have since put a CF card in it), and the hard drive was clicking like mad.

So an iPod really can make Windows crash? Wow! Glad I don`t own one.     I don`t know how, but somehow plugging the iPod into the computer in disk mode with the hard drive malfunctioning might have corrupted files on the computer that are needed for startup. I`m sorry that you have to go through the trouble of reinstalling Windows.

You might consider CF modding the iPod (if it is possible with 5G iPod), or finding a new hard drive. Or looking for a new player.

Yeah, I'm not sure what exactly happened, but it was working perfectly until I tried to sync the iPod, so I have to assume something was corrupted by the player. But in the end, nothing was lost, I emailed Apple and they let me download those 2 songs again, so it worked out okay.

Now, I have to decide whether or not I want to replace the hard drive or not. I was considering doing the DIYMOD, but I may just get a s:flo2 or Cowon S9/J3 instead, and keep the iPod to mod later on...anyways, thanks for the info, much appreciated!

I see that this place is having an effect on you too. Before joining Head-fi I had been a lurker for about 1 year. Head-fi and Anything but ipod are what has gotten me to get my Cowon S9, Creative ZVM, iRiver H120 and Kenwood HD20GA7 along with my Fiio headphone amps and my AKG K420, Sennheiser PX100 headphones and Yuin PK3 earbuds.

Now I have all the DAP:s I need, but I am still looking for better headphones. Right now I am trying to find good deals on ATH ES7 here in Japan. I do not dare to delve into the jungle that headphone amps is. My Fiio amps are enough to boost the bass a little bit.

This place will certainly make your wallet a lot thinner. But it is a nice hobby. So I wish you the best of luck with your new DAP and/or repaired iPod, also I hope you do not go overboard with your spending like some of us do.
