Connecting Studio Monitors to the PC

Thread Starter

I'm starting up creating music. I'm setting up a small bedroom studio. I've decided on the KRK RP6 G2's as my monitors.

Now, I've been looking for almost a week, for a high quality connection to my PC. Everything points to the use of an external audio interface. I'm fine with that but.

Every single god damn audio interface I come across (ranges from Alesis to EMU to M-audio, presonus, you name it) does NOT HAVE WINDOWS 7 SUPPORT, and the one's that do, and are in my price range, are universally peices of crap.

I'm looking for a simple solution costing less than £150 to:

  • bypass my PC's onboard
  • left and right balanced analog signal output
  • I truly don't care about microphone inputs, any other outputs, functions, just the above would be great.

Hopefully you trusty guys at head-fi have a magic device that does exactly as stated above. maybe some kind of cheap DAC.

I've considered just using a high quality 3.5mm -> L&R RCA, but that still means im going through onboard, which sucks anyhow, and the monitors will make it even more obvious.

Perhaps the low end beresford is a good idea?

EDIT: I have a strange feeling this end of the forum doesn't get much attention.

Emu 0404 usb has Win7 support. Also has (hardware) asio support which is essential for music creation/recording

i've heard of a few people getting limited funcitonality with the vista drivers, but i'm not paying £150 for that :/

unless you have the emu 0404 and know it works fine, ill have a better look :)

Tbh, I'm not very interested in these USB Audio Interfaces, for they all need their specific drivers which all suck.

I'm not experienced in this area but wouldn't a small optical DAC or something like a uDac work?

I've had the emu 0404 usb and made it work on Windows 7 final build. I went into safe mode, installed Vista drivers, went back to normal mode and enjoyed some music and had no issues what-so-ever.

Well. I'm getting a ZERO DAC with OPA627 + a USB input.

Thanks for your attention.
