Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits definitely comes to mind when I think of "smooth".

Another one is Mr. Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan.

Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits.

The vocals on Islands by The xx sound very smooth to me in the sense that they seem really effortless and comfortable.

Thought of some more:

Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton

Visions of Johanna - Bob Dylan

You're a Big Girl Now - Bob Dylan

Nutshell - Alice In Chains

Here Comes The Flood (Shaking The Tree version) - Peter Gabriel

Before The Dawn - Judas Priest

I'm not certain what you mean by "smooth", there are a lot of way to interpet "smooth", but I'll run with it an suggest this Rhino label series, Smooth Groves.

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 1

Here's alink to the series at Amazon.

The entire album, Mezzanine, by Massive Attack. A perfect album in every way, and it's just plain smooth. Particularly Dissolved Girl, as stated by someone before.

x2 on Massive Attack.  If you're going down the smoothest electronic road, then 'trip-hop' is where it's at (Archive's Londinium album, for example).

Also, combine trip hop with an avant-garde jazz trumpeter and you get DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo's Ki-Oku.  So so good.

Pat Metheny, The Way Up: Part One. I've probably listened to this track before bed for about a year now. I just love it.

By saying that about going to sleep, it reminded me of Kenny Wheeler's "GNU High" and also his "Angel Song" (w/ Bill Frissell and Lee Konitz).
