Alright, this is going to get tricky, but just try to follow along.

Megan Fox:

Rosie O'Donnell

Don't even try to ABX it though. The differences are too subtle.

Which one is Rosie? Maybe the bottom one that kinda looks like Danny Divito?

It is just that you have gotten used to the stimuli of wearing headphones. I haven't heard both but they might sound similar as well. Before deciding to sell which, rest your ears and then decide.

Good luck.

Edit: Oh and don't worry, that has happened to all of us You are perfectly normal :)

Try doing this.

I have to say, though, there must be something wrong in the chain if you can't hear a diff between the Porta Pros and the HD600, because while I'm a big believer that price doesn't necessarily mean better, there is a significant difference in the sound of the Porta Pros and the HD600. Should be able to pick up on them easily. Porta Pros are more bottom heavy for starters, which is easier to spot than the increase in clarity in the treble that the HD600s grant.

My GF likes my MS-1i's over my DT880/600. I found it funny, then again.. I did decide after a few weeks break from headphones that the DT880 doesn't match my amp AT ALL (DT880's were new & shiny - literally :p)

Actually I face the same problem as you before. Grado SR1i sounds not much better than Onto? But after tried many headphones... it simply because I focus on the details / part of the song i like ONLY. When you imagine the music was in a big hall and feel the whole music presentations instead of what you prefer to listen most you can found out that the whole music presentation was clearer and for some more spacious. The lower bass is tighter, mid is smoother and the highs sparkling all over your head. Maybe is slightly tighter bass, slightly smoother mids, slightly better highs. But overall the whole thing become much better.

or simply you just need a better amp.

so you literally had to make an effort to discern the difference in quality that you paid for?  That's not how its sposed to work, right?

Yeah! It's not about which one you like better. It's about you can't even tell the differences. Very different story here.

Some people do have to learn or at least start caring about critical listening, no offense intended. Comes easily to the serious musicians and recording engineers, I'd figure, but not necessarily to everyone.

Couldn't have explained it better myself.

I said it to OP when he posted on another forum. His amp is a entry level tube costing less than $100. There's a bottleneck right there - power is missing and that's what's needed. Buying on advice/hype of others who have the same setup, and probably haven't heard anything else to compare, isn't an endorsement of such cheap tubes, it's the blind selling the blind.

His soundcard is aftermarket and should be good enough.

In one of his posts he says he can hear some differnces, but not a big as expected, and a has a preference for the portapro, but find things about the 600 nice. Before laying out for a decent amp, he should try and go listen to one.

I have the Grado RS2 and Beyer DT250. Despite all open phone hype re sounstage and all round clarity, my ears prefer the DT250 most of the time. Preference is one thing, but I can certainly tell the difference between them.
