I can't spot the difference between my Sennheiser HD600 and Koss portapro

hi guys,

I think I have spend money for no advantage.

I was about to buy some headphones and decided to buy the HD600 as many people say they improve with better source/amp. This way I wouldn't buy headphones any more. Before these I only used headphones which came with mp3 player or sub 20 $ headphones.

I loved them, decided to buy the bravo audio tube amp. so far so good. I started to pass hour just listening to music, like music was a new thing.

Then I said to myself that I would buy good quality headphones from now on, so decided to buy Head-direct Re0 (on its way to me), and bought Koss portapro to use when I didn't need isolation, as I leave in a small village ( no noise).

MY koss arrived today, so now I'm comparing them to my hd 600, and here starts my problem: I can't spot any difference between my hd600 and koss portapro, I still prefer the hd600 (comfort may be), but I can't say why, they both sound good to me. I can't point a single difference in sound.

Please help me figure out what are the differences, I may not be needing the hd600 if I don't spot a difference.

I use them for gaming too. so If sound is the same I'd sell the expensive hd600 and keep cheap koss portapro

First of all, I assume you have been listening to a lot of music with your headphones. Give your ears a rest. Don't listen to music with headphones for some days (2-3-4 days or more). Then get back to it, the differences will be heard more easily.

It is just that you have gotten used to the stimuli of wearing headphones. I haven't heard both but they might sound similar as well. Before deciding to sell which, rest your ears and then decide.

Good luck.

Edit: Oh and don't worry, that has happened to all of us You are perfectly normal :)

What other gear are you using with your headphones? Perhaps your source unit or source material is the problem. Etiehr your source can't decode the data well enough or your source material is too compressed.

This is good advice. When I don't get to listen to my main set up for a day or two it sounds so much more spectacular when I get back to it than when I am listening to it every day for hours at a time.

If only for gaming, sell your hd600. What type of music do you listen? Whats the source?

The protapro is a very good portable entrance level headphone, and I do not like the HD600 too much, so chances are that you are on that same boat...LOL...Nah seriously, all is in the eye of the beholder, both have stregths and limitations, the HD600 should sound more refined, but not necesarily will be that one I will pick for my taste the HD600 are too laid back, I still have a pair around though...

portapro.  the little headphones that could.

ha.

My vote goes for the Portapros as well, they have a punchy bass and very comfortable.

Your amp probably isn't driving them well enough?

I just assume you have ear problems. I'm sorry.

P.S. I could spot the difference between a Grado SR60 and an AKG K701.

I think a vast, fundamental issue with head-fi is there are a lot of great-sounding under-$100 headphones that sound perhaps 80% or more as good as $300 headphones. That is, the law of diminishing returns is hugely present in this hobby.

A well-amped HD600 is probably going to give you mostly subtle SQ benefits over the PortaPro (although many would argue the differences are not subtle). However, there will probably be some songs the PortaPro handles poorly that don't sound right with it, and I'll suggest you use those songs to test the difference with the HD600. That might be the best way to find if it's worth the expense.

This may sound stupid but turn up your volume. More details can be heard if you increase the volume to about 80 dB. The apple earbuds sounds the same as my HD595 at about 50-60 dB.

Welcome to the world of reality not hype,no doubt some will advise that it is your DAC/Amp that is not revealing enough and advise you to invest another $500-$600 at least.

My advice to you is do not,or you will be even more perplexed.

In all honesty if you like the sound of the portapro stick with it and get rid of the other.

There is a point, spending money might fix the problem, it might not. What kind of music are listening to, some tracks don't respond too well to nicer headphones, and don't have crazy expectations, a lot of money is spent on subtle (but imo worthwhile) improvements...

What's your source?

That and I feel you're under powering the HD600 with a entry level amp like that.
