Fixing Grado Stock Cable/Ending: Help Please

So right now the cable terminates in some large plug (no idea what its called) and I have to use an adapter. I bought a new plug (http://www.takefiveaudio.com/mall/shopexd.asp?id=892) but don't know what to solder into it. Also I want to shorten the cable so I was just going to take some scissors and cut it. At that cut I'll put in the new plug. That's safe right? Lastly, I really hate that plastic Y splitter thing. I would like to cut it off and then just use heatshrink like many other recabled headphones have. Is there some sort of schematic for whats under them? I don't want to use just randomly cut into the wiring by accident. Thanks in advance for reading this and helping. :)

Cheers

I would advocate attempting a few DIY cables before haxoring a grado cable.

They are not particularly dificult to work with, but a little experience will help you out when the shit hits the fan

As much as I would love to get a new cable I can't afford any unless there are ones below $50CAD.

I dont mean build a new cable for the Grados. Maybe later if that suits your fancy, but its more work than reterminating the stock cable.

What I mean is to build a mini-to-mini for example, or an extension cable perhaps. Something where if it goes wrong you still have options with your headphones. If the Grado work goes wrong you have to fix it or send it off. building a simple cable will help you learn to troubleshoot.

right channel is left plate besides the center pin/ left channel is on the pin itself.

Solder the ground unto the base plate.

IIRC there will be a red and white wire - use the red one as signal and white one as ground.

Oh I see what you mean. The thing is is that the only reason I'm considering cutting the original cable is that its too long right now. I travel a lot and its a pain and uncomfortable experience to have a huge wad of cables in your pants pocket. :p

I'm sorry but you completely lost me. Is there a diagram I can refer too? Also theres a blue cable which I understood to be ground and the red and white ones were for sound.
