Like my dad always says "A hobby is only as expensive as how much you love it" which explains his garage full of toy cars. lol.

I'm just fine being poor from buying headphones. I don't even want speakers though, so I'm not too worried about that.

That is quite an assumption there, plenty of us here choose headphones over speakers merely because of preference. And why does this hobby have to be associated with financial stability? There's plenty of us who have spend over 50k easy on headphones rigs. Poor and rich just doesn't really fit into this kind of hobby actually. Some of us have invested thousands upon thousands into this hobby and yet barely afford food. It can go the same way for speaker users.

both seemed to be expensive hobbies just like collecting cd's and vinyls(which i can relate to)..............like cds and vinyls, not much huge difference in them but the more/better/rarer stuff you want, the more costly it gets. but im poor atm so i cant afford much >.>there are expensive speakers as there are expensive headphones.......... and vice versa

also a lot of ppl dont want speakers or dont have room for them and stuff, while headphones can be conveniently used anywhere and everywhere.

I would not agree, it doesn't appear the same way with speaker enthusiast,I've seen them always with their flashy cars and ever so helpful salesman hovering them in high-end audio stores.

I know we have chosen headphones, but because speakers come with many strings attached and with 50k, which is only a small percentage of what you can spend on the speakers we can achieve a lot more where the sound is concerned, but we all know the fact.

Well, for me it's just related to the level you take your hobby, and it's really subjective. For me headphones are a poor man hobby just because I can now only dream about things like HD800 or Electrostats. But if I think about a 1000$ headphone that requires a 500$ amp, "poor man" is not the first thing that comes to my mind...

The gear you are talking about, speaker enthusiast would spend that for a weekend dinner and about the $500.00 amp, mate you would need to do way better then that for a HD800.

Well, I have some pretty decent stereo equipment, and recently decided to check out headphones; on the CHEEEP:

Xonar STX and ATH-AD700 = $280.00 delivered.

Opamps = I had a bunch laying around from the "old" days when I had opamp based DACs.

I am pretty impressed so far, the setup does a few things better(differently?) than the 12k worth of stereo stuff I dabble with. A good portion of that money is invested in speakers.

The important part is I am listening to more music now than I have in the past few months.

I'am really happy for you that the music is getting your attention more then it did before.

That's what its all about!

Well, I was not actually speaking to pair a 500$ amp to a HD800 (I don't know anything about high end headphone gear other than the things I read on this fourm), I was just making an example to say that  considering something "poor man's" or "rich man's" is really very subjective IMHO.  And for me a 1000$ headphone and a 500$ amp, it does not matter what kind of headphone or amp, are just out of my reach now. Maybe there are people who spend thousands for both speakers and headphones, just because they love both and can afford both. But my perspective is clearly the poor man's perspective, so I could be really wrong.

Regards

K.
