Vintage Hi Fi ,VU Meter ,aesthetics

 I am fascinated by images of vintage hi fi with those warm looking back lit VU meters.

 

Is there a reason we don't seem them in modern equipment ?

 

 can anybody recommend a good vintage hi fi source in the UK , the specialists Ive found  so far are silly expensive, any fairs or meets ?

Although not strictly headphone related, Ive managed to find this if it is of interest to anyone in the UK .. . it looks fantastic! :D   http://www.audiojumble.co.uk/

I also love the aesthetics of vintage audio. You can get such beautiful pieces for such low prices, and they are functional! Just try to avoid becoming a pack rat though...

Great links  thanks very much! Yeah theres some really stunning images there!  I think its the soft white glow and subtle movement of the needles...

 

I will have to get hold of something along those lines, what do you mean by "pack rat"  though?

I must say that my favorite feature of my school's mixer is the 11 old school VU meters. Not nearly as functional as the other features it has, but truly lovely to look at.

Whoa! thats a lot of dials and meters! They look great so I wonder why they were phased out in consumer HI FI?
