Another Grado in my cap ;)

I had bought these after numerous recommendations, way back in February, but due to various reasons I didn't get them in my hands (Mumbai, India) till a few days back.

Thanks to all who helped me decide, I've got, yet another excellent sounding, all-rounder and am satisfied with my purchase. On a personal note, nothing satisfies like opening a box and looking at a headphone that looks ageless, and priceless.

The sound is yet to settle in, I suspect, and i have not had a chance to hook these up to my head-amp but as per my usage crossing the 4-hour mark, the mid-range is slightly congested, with the guitar sounding slightly less emotive, but this could actually be closer to the way a guitar sounds, and the SR225 just might have been adding a hint of sparkle. Male vocals seem to have less depth than on the SR225 - although this was a comparison done at 12 midnight, after a long day of work and an hour of cardio.

This is in no way a preliminary review, since I was using my iPod Touch for both phones - not the best source, but did anyone notice something similar to my observations?

Here is a pic:

I also got a Headroom bag. The RS1i was also from Headroom. Nothing special - but I guess it does as advertised...

So what happened? Why'd it take three months for the headphones to reach you in India?

Well, I order through a guy who has an import office in NY. So I pay him half the cost, he orders, and then ships them from NY. But he had some problem with shipping and customs officials so he stopped shipments for around a month. Add to that the delays with me paying, him ordering from headroom, them shipping the stuff, the wait in NY, then shipping to Mumbai and me getting it - nearly 80 days...

The wait was worth it thankfully :)

The 225i...any grado really isnt worth such a wait.  Get yourself a nice sennheiser for half the price and enjoy superior everything :\

Congrats on your purchase - had my eye on these myself as an upgrade to 325is sad

BTW is the arm in the second picture bent slightly, or is it the picture angle?

Do you even read threads anymore, or do you just search recent ones for "Grado" and proceed to troll?

Congratulations on the RS1i purchase. Give yourself a chance to get used to them and they'll no doubt sound better than the 225i. The wood is supposed to add a different sort of coloration, which probably explains why they don't sound right yet. Give it time. These cans are legendary for a reason.

Aside: I kind of miss the invisible edit timer we had before the forum change, being a compulsive editer. Now every one of my posts will show up edited within the minute.

That's just the way it is, it's perfectly normal.

Praise and hate, is that all you have to contribute these days? You may not like grados and though sennheisers aren't for me, I don't go around saying sennheisers are not worth it etc.

When I made the switch from SR225 to RS1, the first thing I noticed were that the highs are more refined and have more "sparkle". The high midrange hump is much more apparent in the RS1 than the SR225, took a few days for my ears to adjust to this and I found that is what made guitar distortions sound more lifelike. In general, the RS1 does sound more exciting than the SR225. I must note that these comparisons are against a woodied SR225, didn't have a chance to compare a stock SR225 to RS1

^Yes, the bend on the arm is totally normal. It does make for a slightly more secure fit, since the arm is bent inwards and headphones are now closer to your ear and the cups are closer apart than on the other Grados. I haven't adjusted the headband yet, though I have hardly got in 10 hours on these, as work is keeping me busy.

But the highs seem to be a little sibliant ATM - maybe they need burn in time as everyone is advising me ;)

Very sweet, and worth the wait I'd say.

Nice! I'd love to try the RS-1 one day, see how it compares to my MS-Pro.

What STAX

If you say SR-202 then thank you. My anticipation for Grado (max would be SR325i) will be much much less and I can focus more on W1000X or an Ortho.

Take your time enjoying the RS1.  It really does take time for the burn-in/break-in process to reach that moment of "ahhhhhh."  One day, you'll be listening and wonder if these are the same headphones you've been listening to all this time.

Every Grado upgrade has left me feeling a little underwhelmed on first listen.  I loved my SR80s, then got the 325i's and thought, "I spent three times as much for this?????"  By the time I got my RS1s, I thought my 325s were so much better.  By the time I bought my GS1000s, my RS1s left them bruised and bleeding.  Yet once my GS1000s had come of age, it wasn't hard to see why they cost such a premium.

The trick, in every case, is burn-in.  A properly burned-in phone simply sounds so much better than something right out of the box.  Don't ask me why.  Anything I'd have a mind to tell you would properly be wrong.  I really don't know what it is, but whatever it is, it is.

Have fun.
