DVI to DMI advice

Thread Starter
Just bought a nice desktop computer for a good prize but the video card only supports DVI i have a 32in 60hz 1080p tv in my room if i get a converter will there be a lot of lag on response time to effect game play on games like WOW,CS, or Crysis? sorry DVI to HDMI*

there is no lag, since the conversion is purely passive, not active - DVI and HDMI carry the same video signal

x2.

Keep in mind however that you cannot get digital audio signal out of it since it's not supported by DVI connections.

Cheers!

Works fine.. I've done it before..

to add the audio you'd need something like this

http://www.supermediastore.com/product/u/apogee-dvi-to-hdmi-converter-spdif-optical-toslink-coaxial-input-output

any lag is likely to be from the TV's circuitry. Decent newer TV's have a game mode that switches off any extraneous processing for lower lag times.

Good luck, and have fun. L4D2 on tv rocks :)

Edit.. unless its a relatively new card.. you might consider spending a similar amount on a new VGA card with HDMI output, like a 4850 or something.. theyre not much more than the converter

Yeah, I've used that sort of converter box, and they work very well.

They do in fact support 1080P and anything that can be sent over SPDIF/Toslink can be seamlessly converted to the TMDS signal that goes over HDMI. They don't introduce any lag because they don't process the signal, they just convert the spdif signal loop to TMDS. It's an electrical thing, not a logic thing.

In fact, I have two of them. I don't want to get into why i have two, there's a whole fiasco there, but one is completely unopened.

So, uh, if you were wanting to do audio over HDMI as well, uhm, the computer i was using back in the day that didn't have HDMI audio sort of died, so, i can cut you a deal on a gently used Monoprice DVI-to-HDMI converter w/ audio, plus Monoprice DVI and Toslink cables. Maybe an HDMI cable too.

If you just want the video, there is no difference at all between a DVI video signal and an HDMI video signal. If you just want the video, get a DVI to HDMI video cable from monoprice, or a DVI to HDMI converter dongle and an HDMI cable.

And yes, as for lag, it comes from the processing in the display itself. The Onkyo receiver i bought on 'cyber monday' has this neat feature where it interrogates the monitor about what the processing time is, and automatically resyncs the audio. It is awesome. If you don't have a receiver that does that, often the TV itself is smart enough to delay the audio to match the video, which is why it's sometimes best to run everything through the TV for input switching.
