Looking for a nice headphones

Okay so I just registered on this website and am looking for a nice set of headphones. Headphones I have tried before are the panasonic htx7's and jvc air cushions. I am willing to spend 100 bucks for new headphones but can go a little higher if needed.

I mainly listen to trance, rap, and rock. Some bands I listen to are Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, 2Pac, and a crapload of trance/acid like sasha, gouryella, union jack etc.

I've been looking for a headphone that can listen to a wide variety like I do and dish out good bass as well as a good soundscape. It can be either closed or open. One headphone that has been recommended to me are the audio technica m50s. If anyone can help me choose a good pair of headphones that would be great! also would I need an amp or no?

Sennheiser HD555.

I would suggest do some of long researching around! It may clear up a bit and help you tone down to several options. It'll probably be better that way for both head-fi and yourself.

I heard the Sennheiser HD555's have less bass than most headphones, is that true or is it just more controlled?

Hard to say. Compared to what? The bass is controlled though.

The M50's aren't bad, I heard so much about them I demoed a buddy's set, don't rule out used cans.
