Using such nice headphones with an ipod is kind of like putting race car tires on a bicycle.

once the kids are a little more accountable, i'll go back to listening to music at home.

got 'em!
they arrived last night and they're pretty nice. i tried them out with my ipod, and they sounded good until i plugged them into my McIntosh, now i see that i'll probably have to get an amp for the ipod at some point. they are surprisingly large, but also surprisingly light. the cord is not as cumbersome as i've read. the sound is just what i was looking for; very present but not in my face.
i think i'll be happy with these for a while...thanks for all the advice and replies.

Try the rsi. Easier to drive.
Just change the pads. The RS1 isn't easier to drive. It's the jumbo pads, with their increased ear/driver distance, that create that impression. I've had both cans, simultaneously, and found the GS1k only marginally needier. With the same pads, the output of these two phones is the same, except that the GS1k has a lot more bass thump.
With flats, it's a whole other experience entirely.
Even so, I would imagine that the OP shouldn't have a great deal of trouble affording a pretty killer portable, which would probably help out a good bit.
i think i''ll order a set of flats and the pads from the RS1(G,L?) and see if that helps the ipod sound any better. i do like these things through my stereo though. i have balanced outs on my pre-amp, i wonder what these things would sound like through them. too bad the turntable is put away for now...
