Does gratuitous images sell in the classical genre?

On a lighter note, I came across the #1 classical CD as listed by Amazon. Now I have an interest in baroque music, but after a preview, I suspect that the cover / avatar could be responsible for it's success just as much, if not more than it's content. You be the judge! (I wonder if this is what Handel had in mind.)

No offense but this is a really ridiculous topic for a thread.

Why are their heads so tiny?

I toss it up to the gigantism fetish made famous during the early Renaissance.

I don't think the thread is silly.

Imagery is an extremely important part of how humans makes decisions - the cover won't sell an album, but it will attract initial attention, and if attracts initial attention, and the content doesn't turn away, they will get a sale.

I would totally think the image is part of why that album is popular - I just can't imagine that Handel's Duets is what is lighting the fires of classical music fans right now.

First of all, I don't know who would be attracted (more like repulsed..?) to that particular cover.

The scenarios I've witnessed have mostly been talented prominent female artists who also happen to be young and attractive, and the photographers know how to sell that well. I don't know about their CD sales but in this case, all of them are proven musicians (I own albums from all three) and are also clearly gorgeous.

Off the top of my head..

Nicola Benedetti - I heard her Mendelssohn Concerto (without knowing who was playing it) and liked it so much that I actually bought it without looking into the musician's background, something I almost never do.

Janine Jansen - a very lyrical and bold violinist, her playing is remarkably emotional and interpretive. She's Dutch =0

Alice Sara Ott - really young, only a bit older than me I think, but her Liszt and Chopin performances are brilliant (and she still has a long way to go =0)

In concert? Don't really care for her artistic style (although do own several of her albums), but she looked fairly better, say, 10 years ago. >_<

I won't deny for a second that the major reason I gave Akiko Suwanai a shot was the album cover, but she certainly knows how to play that violin!
