Monster Beats vs. other reccomendations

What's up guys and girls, i'm new to the forum and had a question. I'm interested in the beats by dr dre, i have listened to them and i think they sound rather good as good as my ath-es7's obviously at 4 times the price. I would like to get some good noise cancelling headphones soon preferrably over ear ones. So before i recieve all sorts of flack for liking the beats i would like to hear other members reccomendations please and thank you

chris.

Does it need to be active noise cancelling? Do they have to be over ear?

Nothing beats an IEM for noise isolation. And though they usually don't have as good sound quality as full-sized for the price, one similarly priced to the Beats will probably sound much better.

It doesn't need to be noise isolating but i would prefer over the ears headphones as i find them more comfortable than some iem models. do you have any suggestions for any comparable or better over the ear models? i'm trying not to mention bose or even monster as options i just find the beats rather attractive ha.

Sennheiser HD 25-1 II is very highly regarded around here for great sound quality and isolation. It'll beat the Beats at half the price.

i was actually looking at those for a brief time, would i need a headphone amp for those if i were to use them with an iphone or ipod?

Don't buy the Beats.

If you listen to what else is on the market, you'll notice that they aren't very good and drastically overpriced. The Beats sacrifice music for bass, which is a terrible tradeoff.

You'll get muffled highs and soggy mids.

Yeah, everyone wants bass at first, but most turn mid-centric with some experience. After all, the human ear and brain are tuned for maximum sensitivity for the mids, where the human voice is located. Bass thump is exciting at first, but you'll grow tired of it. Then you'll get annoyed with the mud in the vocals thanks to heavy-handed bass tuning. And then you'll end up selling the Beats at a loss on eBay for better headphones.

This process will be accelerated if you attend a meet (highly recommended, by the way) and get exposed to quality headphones.

I strongly recommend you to stay far, far away from it but, no, noise cancelling headphones don't benefit from headphone amps. Noise cancelling phones usually have a circuit-like-amp inside them to power the noise cancelling speakers and the headphone diaphragm, so, no matter how good the external amp is, the amp inside the headphone will degrade the sq. Good luck

Have you actually heard this headphone? It has a fairly balanced sound with a bit of a tipped up treble. Also, it sounds good but don't expect it to satisfy us demanding audiophiles, but for the target audience it's a good sounding headphone.

The beats are a perfectly good headphone they are just terribly overpriced. they are dynamic and bassy at times sounds really good. But if you want something that doesnt sound half bad, you like Dr. Dre and you want to look good while wearing your cans then they are made for you.

everyone else should go with the AT M50s instead

From my experience, KSC35 > Beats Studio

Edit: compare through laptop's hp-out jack. The KSC35 improved quite significantly with an amp and with the Beats, have never heard that any owner use them with an amp obviously haha

This is all ridiculously helpful. I will probably decide against the beats due to their extremely high price and cheapish build, can you guys offer any suggestions to other headphones that excel in comfort, sound and quality. I don't mind spending like 2-300 dollars on headphones if they're worth it.

Ultrasone DJ1 Pro?
Great bass.
Cool looking I guess.
Detachable cables.

What kind of music do you mostly listen to?
Dr dre. beats make you ears happy when you listen to Hip hop/R&B/Top40 kind of music. They are designed for that. If your taste covers a broader spectrum of music and want to get more natural and balanced sound then it's another story. Maybe something like DT770 pro (Great noise canceling, in fact many drummers use them in recording sessions)

i mostly listen to hip hop and hardcore but i also listen to jazz, classical, international and latin music, so an amazing all arounder would be awesome. haha

Ugh, the usual Beats hating. While pretty much everyone will agree the Beats Studios are overpriced, even I think they are overpriced, they certainly do not have "muffled highs" and "soggy mids." I'd be happy to pay about $100 for a pair. Maybe $150 tops. I think they sound great. But not good enough to pay for the asking price.

The other Beats stuff though -- Tours especially -- are really bad.

I will second recommends for the M50, though.
You can also check out the Shure SRH750 DJ. Really nice.
