Don't know why the Fiio E5 gets so much hate. Sure it isn't as good as a real amp, but it has it's uses. It especially works well when you want to bring out the bass in your headphones when you don't have the option of using a huge amp.
Because all the Fiio does is increase the volume and increases and muddies the bass, which then takes over the mids a bit. If you have not heard any better than the Astro Mixamp and Fiio E5, then no wonder you think it's good. Enjoy the Fiio.

What else would you recommend for PORTABLE use then? The Fiio without Bass Boost on brings up the volume of my DT770s, where it NEEDS it for my PSP. As for muddying up the bass, I agree, but only a bit with bass boost on. In any case, for portable use, I'm not looking for an audiophile experience, but fun. The Fiio does this just fine.

In any case, I'm not an audiophile, and lean toward fun sounding cans, and not so much a balanced sound like the DT880s have. I like my bassier cans more.

I think it's also blown out of proportion that it muddies headphones up like crazy. I find a lot of the headphones I have tried to sound just fine with the Fiio compared to no amps, the Mixamp, or a dedicated home receiver.

I think you are giving this guy too much credit, I wouldn't waste my time arguing with a tube user.

I mean, seriously. I KNOW the Fiio isn't exactly audiophile grade equipment. But for $20, it does PLENTY to those that don't have amps, or receivers to power their headphones with. I wouldn't walk around with a freaking amp the size of my psp just to power my cans, lol.

Again for bass heavy users, the Fiio E5 is wondrous and brings out the low end (to those headphones that can actually handle a boost in low end, like the M50), without muddying up everything else enough to consider them muddy (though some headphones CAN sound MUCH worse with bass boost on....SOME). Without bass boost, it's just a glorified volume booster that doesn't color the sound whatsoever, which I find to be a good thing, as I do have some devices that can't power some of my headphones well.

The PSP has a WEAK output. I understand you you need extra power. I'm 100% sure that a CMoy will be much better than a FiiO E5.
