cowon upgrade from D2 (also discussing the clip+)

Hi all. I currently have the D2 (have it for few years) and the clip+. the clip+ sound wonderful in flat mode ,much better than the d2 when also in flat mode. the only problem I have with the clip+ is the very short life battery it has,I find myself walking around always looking at the battery indicator and worring that it may gone empty every second
the reason I like the cowon players so much (except for the sentimental value) it because they have great battery life and sound very good. they have almost everything you need in a player except gapless playback (which i couldn't care less about).

I was always admiring cowon players, ever since I has my first I7. I just tweak the D2 a little bit in order to compensate for the little bass roll off and the recessed mids. after tweaking is made it sounds great and much more like the clip+. (if you want i can post my EQ setting for the pk2,I think you will love it).
and now for my main question - did any of you heard the D2 and can compare it to one of their (rather) new players? S9 and I9? do they still implement the wolfson dac chips?
I wonder if they improve the sound over the d2 and I7...also I am interested to know if they sound good in flat mode (without bass roll off) without the need for eq.
thanks!

Both those players have gapless, and they also have the ViVA sound enhancement which I am personally a big fan of.

It's listed as an EQ preset but I am pretty certain it is a sound enhancement as it is listed on the BBE website. It keeps the balance of sound faily neutral but seems to increase sound stage and separation and the whole spectrum sounds richer and fuller. Well worth a listen.

In flat mode there is not a great deal of difference between D2+, i9 and S9 at all.

thanks. I also heard great things about the viva. I also heard that the S9 (don't know about the I9) doesn't roll off the bass with low impedance earphones like the D2 does. anyway,I think that if i would get one of those two players i would go for the I9 just because it is more within my style...the S9 is more like an ipod, too bulky for me.
by the way,do the s9,i9 still use the wolfson dac chip like in the older players?

From the RMAA graphs dfkt posted it appears the S9 and i9 are pretty much indistinguishable sonically.

The S9 does use a wolfson dac chip but if I remember rightly it is a different one to the D2... hold on... quick google....

OK it looks like the S9 uses the Wolfson WM8750S while the D2 used the WM8985.

So if model numbers are to go by the D2 DAC is actually better, but for my ear the S9 sounds a little better all in all, and I have owned and loved both.

thanks for the info. yeah,if going by the numbers it seems that the d2 has the better chip, although it doesn't make sense. anyway, maybe i can look in the wolfson site to check this out.
but as long as it's a wolfson i am sure it is great no matter the model.
I will try also to get some more info on the I9 from iaudiophile site.
