The Exploration of Metal and Progressive Rock - Page 31

Portnoy wrote much of their material.  I don't see how there is Dream Theater without him.

We will notice when the next album gets it release.

Does anyone know Metal Church by the way? Their self titled album still needs a listen and in time I will give it a listen.

I'm excited for the next DT album now that there's no more Mike Portnoy. Long live Dream Theater! :D

but back to Maiden. I haven't heard alot of their stuff post Seventh Son. Only have The Final Frontier and the previous album. Maybe I should give The X Factor a shot then since you rate it so highly .

Well I really don't care much for Dream Theater either and they really sound like a rip off Fates Warning at times.

But my favorite metal band besides Judas Priest is a power metal band Helloween

Here is a few songs.

And whats some of these darker ones you like?

You could easily listen to other Maiden albums off youtube. A lot of stuff sounds really bad there or missing songs but Maiden is popular enough to find good sounding versions to all their stuff. The X Factor really seems to be ignored since it doesn't have Bruce singing on it but usually people who give it a chance and listen to it go hmm this album is actually pretty good. Here is a few tracks.

"Powerslave" is now playing, I needed it...

The SONG "Powerslave" is just awesome.

Apologies in advance to Skylab. I believe he and I have more in common than just our avatar. Prog fan here.

"Red" is a masterpiece

Spock's Beard peeps in on page 22.

Neal Morse (former vocalist for SB) has some good stuff with a religous twist

Transatlantic - Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy and others...good stuff

Kansas page 16 - caught a 30th anniversary show they did for TV bringing back Steve Morse and Kerry Livgren...great stuff

FM - "Black Noise" and I wish I could find the CD for "City of Fear"

"La Villa Strangiato" - Catch Steve Morse's version on Prime Cuts with Portnoy and guests

Off the beaten track, but oh so good: Miles Davis, Weather Report

You folks have everything else covered although I'm not much into the heavier stuff.

to tripp2k, I love the track BIRDLAND :D

Apart from Iron Maiden, darker sounding (or maybe I should say depressing?) metal I like :

Opeth - Morningrise

Opeth - Damnation

Dimmu Borgir - For All Tid

Dimmu Borgir - Stormblast (original recording)

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Mastodon - Crack The Skye

Isis - Wavering Radiant

Since I do like depressing sounding music, stuff by My Dying Bride should be a good fit. But I only have Songs of Darkness Words of Light by My Dying Bride and I wasn't won over by it.

Which is not to say I don't like more pop sounding metal like Nightwish . Also like Bathory's Hammerheat and Blood Fire Death; and corny stuff by Dio and Mercyful Fate

Iron Maiden's "Piece Of Mind" and Focus' "Focus3" are in.

What do you think of For A Minor Reflection? Right now I am checking their album out with my K240 DF connected to my CD690.

Focus' "Focus III" is now playing. I am now listening to "Anonymus Two", the longest track of the album and a really good test track too. Now considering the album was recorded in 1972, released in 1973 it is very good on its own. What mostly stands out is the sound quality of the album.

The music, well the music makes me more picky. For me this album trumps Dream Theater albums I have and more albums too. Focus 3 sounds progressive, fun, groovy and jazzy. I really was thinking of a Soul/Jazz group going progressive when listening to this album even though the Classical influences are noticeable. On my boring DF + CD690 this album sounds stunningly good and before going back to homework "Elspeth Of Nottingham" is my last short moment of bliss. I am utterly surprised how good this album is... (Just my opinion.)

No thoughts on Iron Maiden Piece Of Mind...yet...?

I wouldn't call Iron Maiden 'progressive', more of a follower of trends.  That was a fine album by their standards, however.  I enjoyed it, way back in my youth, when Iron Maiden were more appealing than they are now.

It has been some time ago.

A lot a music came in recently. I am working on some things but I should be able to post some impressions here. There is more to come...
