What would you do? - Page 2

Hey Pepsi I am gonna go a different direction! As long as you and the wife are in agreement with whatever you want to spend then spend it however you choose. The main point I am trying to make is that communication with the wife is way more important than communication on this site. If you both are joined at the hip so to speak then the decision is entirely up to the two of you and whatever opinions you may find here are simply that. Have fun making whatever decision to choose.

I just bought a house and I wished I'd had more for a downpayment so I'm with the house crowd.

But between the two, even though I could never spend that kind of money on audio, I'd go for the rig. If you buy the car you better have enough monthly money to keep it on the road. Your rig will be (mostly) a one time cost and will probably give you more hours of enjoyment as well.

Or you and your new wife could go on a trip around the world or something!

Since your wife agreed, I think it's great. Communication is completely key.

Just my 2 cents, since I've thought about this as well. I'm going to run across the same problem as you, but the way I decided I'd approach it is to build my rigs and feed my audio addiction now and restore a car when I'm retired and I have a bunch of time. This way I can listen to great music while restoring the car

When I first saw the thread title, I thought this was going to be a discussion about Klondike Bars! I had like ten responses ready previous to opening the thread.

Given that you have a house already, I would save most of that and maybe put, as you were thinking, 15K or so towards toys. Your financial situation may be fine right now, but things can always change quick and change hard.

Save the car when your hearing goes bad as you get older. Your ears are only going to be young once.

Neither. Buy a soda fountain and stock up on pepsi syrup boxes.

WANT!!

I'm going to talk about it with the wife again, things tend to play out easier when I talk out loud and just to be sure everyone is on the same page. Sigh, always have to check up with the boss. Marriage, is a b!tch.

I think 15k is as much as i'm going to spend for a long long while if i do go through with it. Just the thought of vinyl makes me drool.

Yes, this is my situation. Honestly speaking, what would you do? This has been lingering over my head for a few weeks now ever since my wife denied my Sony R10 purchase. Maybe i should just put the car on hold and build it when i'm retired/older. We're newlyweds, so there's lots of time, but then again it could go either way. I love each hobby with the upmost passion. Maybe you guys could give me some insight?
It all depends on how much debt/characteristic of debt (CC, personal, student loan) you have, how much you make, how old you are, how much you have in the bank and the value of your trust fund (if any)

Something we've definitely looked into prior to all this. Even if i did manage to somehow lose all that money, we'd still be in good shape financially. Besides my wife's pharmacy loan, the satellite/utility bill, we have no other payments to care of. We did get a prenup, so her money and her bills is her responsibility and vice versa, but of course that doesn't justify me spending my current savings to fund my hobby. That's why i'm resorting to my "dream" savings.

It would just put us in the typical newlywed, new career couple just trying to save up income in order to ultimately have a family. And once again it is only 15k out of that account. 45k gone is just a little extreme.

If you get the car, how often are you going to use it? That is, are you just going to fix it up and let it sit in the garage?

For me, one reason why I'm putting money into home headphones right now is that I'm always at home studying for law school, it's a very intense program. I would actually really love to put money into a few new lenses for the camera, but I actually don't have time to dedicated myself to serious photography. Music though, is great, I can get listening session done during study breaks.

You should've bought your expensive toys BEFORE the marriage! Now, even if your wife is cool - you'll have to split the funds between you, her, and emergency funds.

For a single guy, I would say - why buy a house? Rent and live well, while you're young. Also, a $45K front end is just...too...much...for a headphone rig.
We don't know his financial situation, 45k is not much to some people. I would spend around $5000 on a terrific vinyl rig, and continue to save the rest. More then $5000 imho becomes overkill when it comes to vinyl with minimal differences.

I am in a similar boat right now but my deposit is most definitely going towards a house or unit. Its definitely hard having a large amount of money in the bank and seeing toys etc to buy!! :/
