What would you do?

Say you managed to save about $45,000 to put towards your dream car that you've always wanted since junior high. Now would you stick with that? Or would you go for your dream Vinyl Rig to complement your HD800's?

Yes, this is my situation. Honestly speaking, what would you do? This has been lingering over my head for a few weeks now ever since my wife denied my Sony R10 purchase. Maybe i should just put the car on hold and build it when i'm retired/older. We're newlyweds, so there's lots of time, but then again it could go either way. I love each hobby with the upmost passion. Maybe you guys could give me some insight?

This might not mean much to you now, but trust me... DOWN PAYMENT ON A HOUSE

Car, I couldnt justify that amount of money on a vinyl rig. I'm sure you'll gain a lot more from the car.

What he said. But if it has to go on toys, then go for the car. Vroom.

Unfortunately, being a newlywed (congrats?) just totally changed the rules of the game. Even more, if there's merely the slightest possibility of kids.

You should've bought your expensive toys BEFORE the marriage! Now, even if your wife is cool - you'll have to split the funds between you, her, and emergency funds.

For a single guy, I would say - why buy a house? Rent and live well, while you're young. Also, a $45K front end is just...too...much...for a headphone rig.

What does your wife say about this?

Nah, the real question is which one is easier to hide.. haha j/k!

What you can do to also please the wife is to take part of the money you saved up and put it aside as an emergency fund/family savings first. Then the remainder part and start building up again. Yes, it will take longer for you to reach your dream car or vinyl rig goal but the wife will probably be less concerned since you've already set aside money towards the family's well being instead of your "toys".

Get a divorce and spend your money however you want. That's my advice. It only goes downhill from here.

The rig.

If you are married, chances are you'll have kids soon, maybe?

Kids will RUIN your car. They WILL... even if you THINK that they won't be allowed in it.

Also, you'll be spending more time at home now.... so have the music, because home is where you'll be.

AND..... why a flashy car? you'll no longer been in the market for hot chicks so what use is a hot car?

Believe me, I'm a car + music man... but now you're married man... your priorities have just changed my friend.

Congratulations btw.

Motorcycles are way more fun than any car...You can get a motorcycle AND a vinyl rig for that money. Whichever way you go I'd buy used...$45K on a brand new car will be cut by at least 1/3 when you roll out the door. Vinyl rig brand new...you're lucky if you get half. The real-estate suggestion is probably more likely to actually be a solid investment if spent wisely, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're after.

So your wife denied your R10 purchase but she'll let you drop 45K on a vinyl rig?! If I spent half that on an audio purchase I'd be single again in short order.

Agreed 100%. It's the smartest move I ever made. Renting is like throwing your money in the garbage.

I'd get the Turntable and the arm, cart.and tone arm cable.......I've found in my older age I enjoy my music and Equip and get way more enjoyment out of them then I do driving anymore.....There're way to many a--hole drivers out in the towns now who would just as soon hit, Key,scrape etc.etc your new car/rod in the world today......IMO.... PS. as stated above, I do believe You and the Wife need a house (great tax write-off) then each years tax return you can split it with her and YOU can buy more LPS......

Neither, I would use it as payment on a house/apartment.

I've already talked it over with her and she said that she was fine with it as long as I knew that it was what i wanted.

We already have our own savings for emergency, bills, etc. This is a whole separate account that i managed to save over the years strictly for the car. Now i don't mean blowing it all off my rig, it shouldn't even get that high. On top of that her parents gave us their house that was already paid off by them. We're also renting out the extra room to a few roommates. As far as kids go, we both agreed on no kids for a few years to build up our finances.
I would never consider doing this if i wasn't confident that our financial situation was in control.

My budget that i would like to put towards the rig is roughly 15k. After that it will be at least 10 years until i can start putting money back into the account.

I already have a powerful amp that drives the 800 with authority. The 2 main pieces i need is a solid phono pre amp and a high-end turntable.

Once again, as stated above, I have a budget. My wife agreed because it was money that i saved up prior to everything, before we even met, as to the R10's, i wanted to use money out of our current savings, which she obviously disagreed with the utmost aggressiveness. The car is not some exotic import or whatever, but it would have been project car, specifically an 1970 Dodge Charger i was going to rebuild. And trust me, it would only gain value after that.

I apologize to everyone about not elaborating well, I made this thread in the middle of the night, and was careless on my descriptions.
