No, the v1 and v2 firmware versions indicate different hardware. The v2 hardware is not compatible with Rockbox.
I have found the most sure-fire way to locate a v1: search eBay for used, refurbished, and open box Sansas, and ask the sellers. I did this recently. Here is the email I sent through eBay:
Quote:
Dear *****,
Hello, can you possibly tell me whether if this Sansa player is a revision 1 or revision 2 model? This info can be found easily:
- Turn on the Fuze
- Select Settings from the main menu
- Select System Settings
- Select Info
- Verify the Version #
Revision 1 = 1.XX.XX (example: 1.02.28)
Revision 2 = 2.XX.XX (example: 2.02.28)
Thanks in advance.

Surprisingly, I got several sellers who said their refurb units were in sealed boxes and they couldn't check. Whatever. Luckily, I did get several "it is a version 1" responses as well. I think I sent out 10-12 "ask seller" messages, and I got some sort of response on nearly all of them.
I know you said you would prefer a new unit, but buying a used/refurbed unit is and ASKING is the only real way to know in advance. Otherwise, it seems to be a total crapshoot. Hope that helps!
