Was it even a DC power supply to begin with?

Yeah, it was a power-brick I picked up at a yard sale, with 12v @ 1amp, so no idea on unregulated vs regulated. Without thinking about it, I was under the impression that all power supplies were regulated, but I guess that was faulty...and costly.

Can the regulator on the Total Airhead be replaced? I don't really have a solder sucker, but I could get one from Radio Shack for like $8....

Also, it appears to be doing fine now on batteries, though that's still a pretty low current, does that indicate incompletely fried circuitry?

As for the plug, it was the wrong configuration of center-pin/sleeve, so I had to cut it off and stick it back on in reverse, but that's just cabling.

Yes, definitely DC. I may be stupid sometimes, but I can read.

The TAH probably requires less than .1A so I'd wager you were feeding it a lot more than 12V. Regulated power supplies are expensive, odds are any cheap DC power supply you find is going to either be horribly regulated or completely unregulated.

It's unlikely that it was the only component damaged and you'd likely spend more fixing it than replacing the entire thing. You could call Headroom and see if they would be willing to help, they're good folks.

It's quite possible that the battery power supply is completely separate and was unharmed by the cooking regulator.

Well, if I ever need a portable hot-plate, and only have my Airhead, I guess I know what to do. Here I was thinking that on the ampage was fine.

I'll ask them about service come Monday (work + finals now), but how is their service? I imagine that shipping there + back would run $20 ish, but would I be able to open it up and examine it?

is there a dissassembly guide anywhere?

On some wall warts, the center pin is negative.
