Has anyone else confirmed this I believe Joe may have agreed with this comment but just wondering if others have the same experience as I would not want the treble to get quieter even as I like the rest of changes ElWappo noticed.

The acoustic guitar in the background is slightly quieter on the customized SM3 than on the stock SM3's, but the details are all still there so everything is still resolving. I wouldn't describe it as less bright, as tonality has not changed, rather just the volume is slightly lower.

Actually the treble of the SM3 doesn't sound recess at all. Now, like you, I don't care for triple flanges and find these tips somewhat uncomfortable, but at the same time, these tips are best in balancing out the entire sound spectrum of the SM3.

Yup now to find a way to enjoy that treble goodness without wanting to scratch my ears from the inside out due to triple flange tips...

Damn, I have been looking for it for a long time when I could be capable of buying it, not now I had spent my money on something  else.............

I don't know about free shipping, there wasn't an option, but I chose the $20 shipping charge.  I very interested, but in the same time I am really interested in the unknown RE-262, and really, I have enough IEMs to be content with.  Off to the used market haha

Now, please put this thread back on track. As I recall, my comments about the DBAs were my opinions as it related to me comparing it to the SM3. You - the dimwitted posters who have a gripe with me - act as if I went into the DBA thread and belittled it before all of its fans. Get a life! Happy listening.

Your words betray you. You care very much, otherwise you wouldn't resort to childish name calling. And for the record, my comment about your posts while concurring with slaters70's assessment, did not specifically relate to your exchange with him regarding the DBA and the SM3; neither of which I have heard. It was a far more general observation based on reading many of your posts in several forum threads, which I suppose is even more damning, but there you have it. So do try and get your facts straight before retaliating. And by the way, there's nothing "fancy" about having a vocabulary that exceeds your own. Anyway, as you keep saying, let's get this thread back on track. "Happy listening. "

I don't think it was ever 289.  299 was the lowest and the price went up since.  My instinct tells me to cancel my order.  My head says I'll go nuts not knowing what the real story is with these things.

Dweaver.  You want more treble on the Coppers or just the SM3's?  I couldn't handle anymore treble on the Coppers.

Well, if you order, and it should be cheaper since shipping would be cheaper, and they don't accept the price, just tell them to cancel it.  I am tempted but I need a new amp/dac...

Thread Starter

What am I up to and why am I not posting?  I don't really have anything to add.  I gave my opinion, made my decision on what to do with my IEM collection, and now am waiting for some other gear.  And while I can't keep up with all the posts in this thread, I do read some from time to time.  Seems that tips are a big issue as some hear it like I do while others don't.  But I guess that is all IEMs as one man's trash is another man's treasure!

I still like the EM3 Pro and it gets the most head time, which has been dramatically less this summer.  I am still eagerly awaiting an email from Audeze letting me know I can pay for my LCD-2.  Now that is the way business should be done IMO, not like the other product that was paid for long ago and no real answer as to when I will get my Pico Slim.  Just wait and be happy I am on the list I guess.  I am also waiting for Meier Audio to release the Stepdance, which sounds good on paper!  I also have several things I want to sell, but no time.

As for head time, I expect it to go up in the fall, at which time I will finish my EM3 Pro review.  The EM3 Pro and SM3 still fulfill my audio needs when on the go, and the T1 is nice at home, but I still use the EM3 Pro at home with my RPX-33 as it has more bass impact which I prefer with electronic genres.  But they both bring something different and enticing to the table.  I can't wait for the LCD-2, though, as from my reading it combines the headphone characteristics of the T1 with the chameleon characteristics of the SM3.

I am happy for those of you that bought the SM3 and are enjoying it, and for those that prefer something else, I am glad you have found that something else!

Contentment tends to be the main issue here on Head-Fi, are we content at what we have?  Some say yes, some say no, some are in between and deciding if they are a yes or no.

dweaver, if I can get the stock double flanges in deep enough, it seems to help the recessed treble some.

Ok, here's where I'm currently at with the SM3s:

Tips: currently using JAYS medium single flange silicones. Really, really comfortable, fit like a dream and sound beautiful. The double flanges that Earsonics are selling are different to the ones that I got with my SM3s originally - narrower hole - and I dont like them as much as the Jays. I am expecting the Sensorcom large hole double flanges today so am yet to try those but will report back.

Source: Cowon J3, on following custom eq setting

80hz  wide  3

300hz wide  2

780hz wide  3

3.0khz wide 4

13khz wide 5

BBE 10

M3Bass 5

3D Surround Off

MP Enhance On

SE Off

Reverb Off

Sound: Forking unbelievable.  Almost impossible for me to imagine a universal iem sounding better than this.

Benny, that's a massive equalization, mainly the BBE10! Did you try getting accustomed to the sound sig  with no eq? I like my SM3 ruler flat on my Cowon.

Yeah, I tried, but no dice. Not saying you're wrong at all, but there does seem to be a lot consensus that 'normal' or ruler flat setting on Cowons is pretty ropey sounding.

Give my settings a go and let me know how it sounds to you.  They're the result of lots of tweaking and adjustments and I may be completely wide of the mark when it comes to your own specific tastes but they seem to suit me with the Jays tips down to the ground.

What tips you using, by the way?

Ok - update.

The Sensorcom double flanges (http://www.sensorcom.com/product.asp?P_ID=1142&PT_ID=268) just arrived and they're actually better than the Jays tips - dont provide quite as much 'airiness', but the fit is equally as comfortable and there's an increased solidity to instruments and vocals that is an improvement over the jays. I'm pretty sure after even a short listen that I prefer them.

FYI - The Sensorcom tips have an opening of similar size to the original double flanges I received with my SM3s and then managed to lose - doh - about 3mm in diameter.  Although they are slightly smaller in overall size, they are the same colour and feel as those originals too.  With a little trim of the stalk, they fit the SM3s and my ears perfectly - better in fact than the stocks I initially got.

I'd recommend them without reservation. Note: they are not the same as the ones Earsonic are selling on their website, which are grey, have smaller diameter hole (about 2mm) and do not sound as good to my ears.

Now with regards to EQ: given what Photofan suggested, i've actually gone back and tweaked my EQ settings on the J3 down to flat but still keeping BBE at maximum, cos I just think it sounds better that way.  I'll admit it does sounds great, but will need to spend some time with it to see if its an improvement over my previous settings.  My gut feel says yes, cos there was a hint of harshness in the treble that has now been smoothed out. Am, not afraid to admit I might have been wrong there, so thanks for pointing that out.

Too many variables in this business, its frustrating sometimes.  And my bloody ears hear different things at different times.  Wish I was a robot. But then again, it kinda feels good to tinker, know what I mean?

No problem

I was just asking. I tried your settings and it sounds good, but a bit too V shaped for my taste. Actually, I know my damn ears get accustomed easily to equalizing, so I try to keep it to the minimum. I, however, use the stereo expand feature and sometimes a hint of bbe, cause yes, it sounds good

Oh and by the way, I'm using a home made biflange (still don't know where it comes from , maybe UE) put on a Comply core. It has very big openings and it's not too long.

Maybe I'll end up going the custom tips route...we'll see :p

Yeah, I think my ears are pretty fast adaptors too.  Just been out to lunch and tried out these new Sensorcom tips with BBE off and a flat line eq and it does sound damn ace, so I'll stick with that setting for a while and see how it unravels.

Gotta love the SM3 and Cowon combo though - they make such sweet music together.
