even if it's a little less than the SM3 Photofan, it will still be good to me. I'm not expecting a two-driver to perform like a three diver, but from all accounts of what I've read, the SM2 holds up pretty much on its own.

Well, I would, but he's so ungrateful it's just not worth it. I mean, once, about three years ago, I sent him a very very nice pair (a matching pair I hasten to add) of Sony EX tips in medium, and did he even thank me? Well, yes, but only about seventeen times, which, let's face it, is not that grateful. But if he learns how to express gratitude in a more befitting manner, then I might send him an ear-cleaning tool to demo, and perhaps a shirt clip. But I can't promise it will be both

Ha ha ha ha.... I try! ;0)  Too bad there's no international meet so we could save all the Int'l. postage.

meet, what we need is a full EEA/NAFTA customs union and add in Anzacland too

LOL @ you two. Actually, soozieq, the ear-cleaning tool is a bit too much to send to cn11. I fear he may not return it. lol. Send something that you're willing to take the loss if cn11 let his typical ungenerous ways get the best of him. Something like a used fake large triple flange Monster silicon tip (just one), or a pair of Shure SE420s. lol..........

He's never sent me anything but his best wishes and what use could I possibly have for those?

It would be nice to meet up with a select few of you for an international meet of sorts some day but I'm currently in hiding in Pakistan. Although I might be able to drop in if I can find a suitably located safe house. I don't relish returning to Afghanistan just yet. The caves are so gloomy this time of year.

That's it? He sent best wishes and nothing else? Unbelievable! If his best wishes came my way without earphones or something shiny attached, I would not be a happy bunny.

eric- I can't trust Chris with any kind of tip any more. He's had his chances. However, if you have a spare used one lying around, send it to me, and I'll send to Chris - along with my best wishes...

^ I know. Isn't it beyond the pale? He obviously saves his best side for you soozieq - wimmin!

Sounds like a million bucks so far (compared to my previous UM3X at least!) :)

I know it is apples to oranges, but how does your SM3 compare to your HD800?

I'm still "burning-in" the SM3s if you believe in that sort of thing! Will report back in a couple of days when i've reached a conclusion.

Out of the box however, the SM3s definitely have a larger soundstage than the UM3Xs and are also way more musical. One of the reasons i sold the UM3Xs was because it sounded so boring and analytical all the time!

There are however some potential flaws with the SM3s but will see if they do improve after some "burn-in" time.

Care to elaborate?

@ iponderous , Your suspicion about the SM3 is pretty accurate however you can add similarities to the TF10 and westone 3 to your list

Hi soozieq! I'm not at all surprised by your conclusions. My suspicion has been that the SM3 is another top-tier triple balanced armature earphone that is offering a different flavour to its competitors but is not a great technological leap forward from them. It does some things better and others perhaps not quite as well. However, it does appear to share some sonic similarities with the UM3X and SE530. If that is the case, then it is not for me because I prefer the TF10 to both of those phones.

^ I wonder if soozieq concurs with you as she has also owned the W3 and TF10? I haven't heard the W3 but the TF10's treble isn't slightly recessed or veiled sounding as the SM3's treble presentation has been described. The TF10's mids are also slightly recessed whereas the SM3's would appear to be more prominent in the mix from the descriptions that I have read.

I've no reason to doubt that the SM3 is a very good sounding earphone, but I don't think that I will be joining its devout followers. I suspect that my aural nirvana is to be found elsewhere and probably in the form of an earphone that can achieve the refinement and balanced presentation of a balanced armature phone, with the more "organic" and visceral qualities of a dynamic driver phone.

To my ears, SM3 has a very natural and powerful sound (outstanding for a BA). The only thing that it lacks is just a tiny bit of clarity for that ultimate "I am there!" feeling. In fact, I have yet to hear a dynamic headphone that has a significantly more natural timbre and a richer sound.
