I wouldn't mind giving a HiFiman a try, unfortunately I don't think It'll fit in my case w/ my Lisa III, but I can always find a larger case. I'm also wondering, what is the battery life on a hifiman like when using an external amp?

I have the regular amp.  No hiss with Grado GR-8 or RS-1i

thanx I was just wondering since the game amp is suited more towards lower impedance iems if that meant that the original would hiss with iems.

I have ordered a Kingston 32GB SD card type 4 and should get here on Saturday. More to come.  Thanks Fang for the opportunity.

@Sonic 748i

Buffalo 24 is much much better than the Hifiman HM-801 as dac, no doubt about it. I compared them through the AMB M3 amp and ATH-AD2000s; I heard the difference within like 10 mins. Hifiman HM-801 is probably a little better than the Audio-gd Compass as dac IMHO (It could be that I just like its sound signature a little better).

Finally get some more impressions from different people - will be nice to get fresh ideas of the HM801. I am particularly interested in levels of 'hiss' with sensitive iems such as westone ES3X etc.

Shigzeo, I think the only way you're going to cure your HM-801 'hiss' curiosity is to get one for yourself!

post #40 of 45

haha, yeah, probably. But I don't think that's going to happen. At home, I tend to use nice DAC's and whilst out and about, I tend to prefer something smaller. who knows though: I may eventually bite..

Mine just cleared customs

I've been using the 801 with ES3X for more than half a year and never heard it hisses.  This was supported by Sasaki's finding.  In fact, he had the 801 much earlier than me and my finding confirmed his finding.

Try searching through the head-fi and I doubt you can find any hissing report between the 801-ES3X combo.

The combo of 801 and Lisa III sounds good.  Worth to listen to.  The battery life is similar to that of the Lisa III XP and that's really good as you can use and charge them at the same time.

Hiss is only noticeable with very high sensitivity IEMs, not with the higher impedance ones like UM3X and ES3X, at least according to people on head-fi. I have the HM801 with the old high gain standard module and the hiss is noticeable with: W3s, LiveWires, and Sleek-Audio CT6. With the GAME-module there is no hiss at all unless the volume is unpleasantly high and you aren't listening to anything. The noisefloor with the GAME card is about equal to that of the RSA Tomahawk at least with the earphones I have tried so far.

Thanks lads. Nice to good comparisons there. I am a hiss freak (I admit it), so this is paramount for me.
