ATH-W1000X Appreciation Thread! - Page 116

Anyone tried using W5000 pads for their W1000X? Just wondered whether there was much difference in sound.

Thanks

I have a 1000x in review right now.  The "wing" headband may not be for everyone.

Oooh nice. Will wait patiently for the video.

I've owned an AT with wing headband before so I guess I know what I'm walking into.

But I'm curious whether you will review the W5000 too? I saw your unboxing vid, but couldn't find the video of your thoughts. From your comments on YT seemed like they were not your cup of tea?

The W1000 also has something similar, but they aren't big enough for anything substantial to go through. And in fact, I suspect they were used merely to tune low mid and create that sweet midrange.

Indeed!!  I see the holes in the W1000X, but not in the W1000.  So, your mod is to increase the holes in the W1000?

Maybe I just got lucky and heard it out of a good source. I did notice that it does change depending on the source, and it likes tube amps the most. W1000 + Schiit Vali has such a massive soundstage that my DT770 pales in comparison. It's an interesting effect that I haven't heard with any other Audio Technica headphone.

Yeah.  Schiit has good synergy with the woodies.  The Asgard works very well too.

Well, you have somehow gotten your wish. I'll put that DT770 up for sale soon. Reasons below:

Yeah, my mod is simply to open up some holes in the W1000.

I wanted to verify the results before writing down impressions...

But I didn't expect this: I'm selling off ALL of my other headphones to keep just the W1000. To my ears, my modded pair is just so far ahead of my other headphones that it's not even funny. And the W1000 with a darker sound and more bass is pure perfection to me.

Wow!!  This is quite a statement!

Could you please post a couple of photos + instructions on how to do it?

Well, I only have "after" photos now. I forgot to take photos of the internals before the modifications.

But sure, I can try to post some instructions and a list of what to purchase to dampen the ear cups.

Now I'm itching to compare my W1000 to the L3000...

My W1000X rocked up today at my local post office. I'll be picking it tomorrow afternoon, I won't be able to listen to it till the next day after that though as I'll be working tomorrow night till 1am.

Cannot wait to hear this with my Kpop and pop tracks, all of which are female singers. I also have plenty of rock, jazz and acoustic to put to the test.

Hello everybody, i`m new here on the forum and the very happy user of a ATH-w1000x can. I love them.

Just ordered new pads ( L3000) and still searching for a nice amp.

At this moment i`m using a very cheap Pro-Ject Headbox, right for the moment but not forever.

I have a big system with Sun Audio SV-2a3PE monoblocks, Sun Audio SVC-500 preamp, Musical Affairs Grand Crescendo speakers.

I wanna buy a good headphone amplifer, prefer tubes, budget 1000- 1200 euro ( till 1500 dollar),

Read the whole thread ( cost me some hours :normal_smile :) , but only less information about a match in heaven between ATH-w1000x and an amp.

Who can give me some good tips? I live in Europe, so it must be an amp with 230v.

Maybe you could contact had-audiolab and have them built you an amp tuned specifically for w1000x? I have not heard their stuff but everyone who owns those seem to be very satisfied. http://www.had-audiolab.com/product.asp?id=79

Looks and reviews seems ok for me, but no change to listen before buying...

Still considering..

Are the L3000 pads as deep/soft as the HM5 pads?

... I have no idea, but the L3000 pads are wider  n a smidge shawlloer than the stock pads w1000x pads

I am still baffled... because after extracting that bass out of the W1000, I can see that Audio Technica made a very deliberate effort in order to "stop" that bass in its track. Sure, it gave the headphone more clarity, but they could have used a different dampening material, and the bass will be controlled but yet clarity won't suffer.

Anyway, long story short... I'm afraid I can't sell modded W1000's. Because I'm certain Audio Technica fans won't go for any other Audio Technica woodies after they hear a bassy W1000. It's just that good! This is like the ultimate midrange-head headphone.

We want Audio Technica to give us a W2000X or something along that line!

When was the last time they refreshed their wood lineup? It feels like it's been ages.

Anyway... LCD-XC... I think you'll like the clarity and details. Not sure if you'll like the weight... as it is heavier than it looks. And not sure you'll like the price. I haven't seen one on sale for less than $1700 used price. It is a relatively new headphone after all, and a very good one at that.

I dread the fact that I couldn't talk about it in details after auditioning it at CAS last year. I felt it was THE closed-back headphone to beat. That is... until I heard the W1000. The LCD-XC gave me this "wow, this is a very nice headphone!" feeling. I would have considered getting one for $1000 or so. The W1000? I heard it, and I felt "I must absolutely own this thing at any price point!" It was put right next to the W3000ANV and W1000X. Neither of the other 2 headphones stood a chance... except for bassy tracks. My offer to purchase that pair of W1000 was declined right on the spot (without any hesitation, I might add, even considering I asked the owner to name a price), as the owner obviously also loved the W1000 more than his 2 other headphones.

Again I could care less about teh weight, I wore a pair of old Panasonic Monitors when I was in my Freshman year... they literally weighed about 3lb's BIG OLD 70's SOLID headphones, I think I can live with a heavy can :3 and as far as teh price goes, it is high. It'll go down by the time I'm ready to buy one in like a year. But yes I would LOVE a w2000x q.q cmon audio technica make a new woodie!

Personally I only listen to my W1000x out of my Hm801, so as for sources and dacs, I'd say go with a very warm Dac, something like a PCM  or NOS Dac chip, or a dac that chops the highs a little bit

So get a warm dac and a very clean solid state

or get a super clean dac and a pair of tubes, I enjoyed the w1000x with the Schiit Vali and SE out of my NFB 10ES2, I'll admit the w1000x sound stage is a little cave ish, but Purrins mod and L3000 pads helped to give it a little more natural sound, and honestly I slighty blocked the Bass ports in my w1000x, to help open the sound stage and clarity up, along with leveling out that mid bass hump and getting rid of some of the mid range decay

non the less, IF your ok with a poartablt player, I really like the HM801 [I use it line out] the hm801 can also function as a PC dac as far as amps go I'd avoid the HEadphone Out of the Hm801 [it's horrific] and get your self a nice amp to run out of the hm801's line out

Or if you've got money, try getting one of Kingwa's [AUdio GD] PCM or NOS based dac amps.

The review is scheduled to be in the upcoming issue of TONEAudio magazine.  It will not be on my YouTube channel.

I found the W5000 to be too slow and lush for me, but I may not have the ideal amp for them when I had it.  I may buy them again just to have in the collection.
