I just had a listen with my W1000X connected to the headphone output of my Olive O6HD and after that connected it to the Bryston BHA-1.

Had some Annie Lennox Playing and what felt best to me was the Bryston...

Did a quick A-B test with the W1000X and AKG K550 and it was a hard one to pick...

The K550 has great detail and sounds real clean with a nice bass.

The W1000X beat the K550 though.. It sounds more natural and laid back, better for long listening sessions.

Trust me if you mod and L3000 Pad swap your w1000x it'll wipe the floor the the K550, the ONLY thing the K550 had on my Modded L3000 Padded W1000x was Sub Bass,

Well, looks like I'm finally in the W1000x club after acquiring one.

I ended up selling the AD900, A950LTD, AD1000RPM, and the AD2000 before. Mainly because of the unnatural coloration.

Hopefully, these ones will prove slightly more neutral and balanced.

These will be it for me, my last headphones for a while after cans like the T90, T1, HD700, HD800, K712, etc.

I just want something not too expensive, that doesn't require me to break out the B22.

I recommend you Mod your W1000x and slap some L3000 pads on them to give them a touch more neutrality

for better or worse, a lot of modded W1000x are appearing on the F/S thread, hopefully you got one of those

Just picked up a pair of these brand new for a great price. Been looking for reference closed-back cans and was looking at the D5000, D7000, or Alpha Dog. Figure I'd pull the trigger on these because of the deal and, if they don't work, could sell them off. How does the ATH-W1000X compare against a D5000 or Alpha Dog?

It should be better than the D5 for sure, D5 is very bass heavy, the Alpha Dog how ever should be a step above the W1000x, although it's darker where as the w1000x is a tad brighter

I think the Alpha Dog, being a planarmagnetic headphone [personal preference] probably does have an advantage over dynamic closed headphones...

It'd be the only closed headphone I'd consider apart from the LCD-XC [planar as well]

I personally didn't like any orthos in terms of practicability. Comfort, looks, and design was mediocre at best.

Even if it sounds good, won't wear it if they aren't comfortable :)

So what I'm basically hearing is "good decision?"
There are no bad decisions in the audio game, just learning experiences...

Exactly, the only bad decision is Beats by Dre ;3

Other than that it's all moot tbh.

Still The w1000x is a nice can, try not to scratch that wood though!

Guys, of course I know all that matters is my ears. I'm just trying to make sure I didn't make a drastic mistake when searching for some good closed cans. Sounds like that's the case, so I'm excited to get them! I know I'll have issue with the band. I had to mod the AD700 pretty drastically to get it to fit right. Not looking forward to that at all.
