No. Your not the only one. I'm keeping mine for life. They are just too sexy to let go. haha lol that reminds me of something. I had a girlfriend that I've said that about hehe but at least the headphones don't drive me crazy! !

Pff did u mod ur W1000x, still comparing it to a modded Flag Ship is a little un fair :3 but I think it could have held it's own fairly well. Well as long as your still in the Wood Closed Back club it's cool

If you didn't mod it it's hard to appreciate it's full potential.

With L3000 Pads and Purrin Mods it s a nice can! I liked it with the Vali as well, and it was a touch sensitive to the hum

and shame on all of you for selling your W1000x :[ am I the only owner left on this thread >.>

Hey I really wanted to like these!
I guess I've build an aversion to closed headphones now that I own or owned a bunch of great open backs... The lack of air just got to me ;\ send all the shame my way for not modding my cans ;D

I modded my w1000x and changed the pads. I liked it better than stock dx1000, hd600, dt880, k701 etc. Allthough very different it got as much headtime as my T1 did. Then I modded dx1000 and it improved so much that I had no reason to keep T1 and w1000x. I would have of course if I didn't need the money... So even though I sold mine I still recommend it to people looking for headphones in 400$ category. Even though it's closed it's still a step up in quality from likes of hd600 and dt880 and at the moment it doesn't even cost that much more.

I've sold my Vali after 2days, just could never sell my W1000x, far too beautiful and I love the contrast between them and my he-400s, woodies for acoustics, vocals and bands, he-400 for dance & electronica, looking towards an asgard 2 now.

Fair enough. I can under stand that agsinst a $800+ Modded can there is little reason to keep em. Im hoping my stock d2k pads will b a sonic improvement or equivilent to the L3000 pads... as the d2k stocks r a smidge comfier

What did you try, out of interest?

Monkeyboylee:
AKG K701, 702, 702 Annie (still have it), 550 (my daily office hp's)
Denon D2000 (1stock, 1 with upgraded cable), D2000 Level 3 Lawton, D7000 Level 3 Lawton
Sennheiser HD600, HD650 (both with several different cables)
Beyerdynamic DT880 600ohm
Audio Technica W1000

My favorite is the AKG K702 65th Anniversary, I love the detail and the added low end the 701 and 702 are missing.
The Denons all are too heavy on the bass for my taste.
The Sennheisers are nice, but fit too tight and sound 'claustrofobic'. Sounded to me like bring in a tiny room filled with music.
The Beyerdynamic DT880 was in my ears better than the Sennheisers (in the claustrofobic department), but missed the detail of the AKG's.

The W1000 was the easiest to listen to for longer periods of time. It has the perfect balance. Detailed, but not annoyingly so. Bass was good, but not too heavy. Not as big soundstage as the AKG, but definitely not as closed as the Sennheisers.
All in all the best closed back out there for my ears.

I could not agree more :3

I am actually thinking of getting the W5000 here shortly... after I balanced my W1000x, although tbh all of my amps are balanced so I should have a nice BIG improvement in the W1000x sound once I balance it, as my iBasso PB 1 & 2 and NFB 10ES2, all have cleaner and better sounding Balanced Circuits than they do SE... so once I optimize my W1000x to work with the best my amps have to offer I should be golden :3 [till the upgrade bug bites]

but I actually own the DT 880 and a D2k [Lvl 3 Mark L Mods] I prefer the D2k for mostly EDM, of which half my music collection is. So my portables are my Balanced MD2k and my SE [Soon to be fully balanced and Recabled] Modded W1000x

and at home I only use the Dt 880 :D

Mshenay:

Let me know how they sound balanced.
I have the bryston bha-1 that has the dual 3 pin and 4 pin balanced output. If it improves a lot I'll try balanced also.

Well from my experince MOST balanced amps sounds much better from the Balanced out than they do their SE

I'm not going to debate wheater the W1000x sounds best in SE or Balanced, BUT if your amp is balanced then you should also balance your headphones. To get the very best of your amp

but I do feel all headphones sound best balanced <3

Are there any $300 desktop non-balanced amps out there to really make these sing, I've tried portables but the dx50 direct HO is on par with these IMO.

I really, really liked them with the 2014 Matrix Mstage prior to selling them.
The standalone amp is 250, DAC version comes at 300 (worth it imo, a nicely integrated xmos and burr-brown PCM1793)

Cheers, sounds promising, what have you replaced it with btw?

Try a PS Audio GCHA, that one is dead quiet and will make any set of cans sing.
