I'm a big fan of my pair. I've been thinking about updating the pads. Where do y'all suggest I get some from?

I got the Hifiman pleathers and I like them quite a bit. X)

It has been a while since I caught up with this thread  -- just read through 15 pages or so and really enjoyed conquerator2's earpad explorations.

On the use of Shure SRH840 pads on the W1000X, I did this mod some time back and never looked back.  The bass really tightened up while keeping the great imaging of the headphone.  Of course, I bent the headband too to give me a better seal.  The end result is a headphone that is ideal for late-night listening, especially with all forms of jazz.

Looking at the pictures, the SRH840 pads have a dimension and shape like the Hifiman pleathers, except that the Shures are oval and thus have more stretch to them towards the front of the headphone where the lip is shallower.  They look a little weird as a result because the front of each earpad is receded a bit from the wood cup.   It is a bit hard to explain, so maybe I'll get some photos up to show what is going on.

But the key advantage is the seal.  Because the SRH840 earpads are oval (and I've oriented them vertically on this round headphone), they tend to seal better in more positions than the circular earpads do on the 900X which I also have.  My earpadded W1000x is tons more comfortable than the 900X too.

But if you already have the Hifiman pleather earpads, I would not choose to get the SRH840 pads as well, as I suspect the experience will turn out to be very similar with either one.

I wonder how the 840 pads compare to the L3000

Thanks conquerator2 and jazzman7. I'd love to see pics of the 'phones with the SRH840 pads on them.

I got my W1000x a few days ago and enjoying these alot. The fit is perfect but i think i have the perfect Audio-Technica shaped head :D I like them more than the W3000ANV i had last year. They are definately not better headphones but i prefer them so far. Am i the only one?

I noticed the same thing, I ADORED my w1000x on the mStage

It's a can that likes Warm Amps, even after I modded mine, I still like it best out of my NFB 10ES2 x Schiit vali, and the Hm801 Pb1 is a nice combo for it as well

and actually :D I'm going to get a pb2 here shortly with the same OP amps as my M Stage had :3

Is it just me but my w1000x's seem really sensitive to the Vali, I get a feint humming that I don't get from my dx50 direct or from my previous E12 amp, also the microphonics do take longer to settle than my he-400's which has no humming. Just want to make sure it's normal.

Yep the 1000X is pretty susceptible to hissing.
The HE on the other hand is a planar and these don't really hiss ever xP
Oh, by the way, I've sold my W1000Xs yesterday, sorry guys ;/

I have to agree fully with conquerator2. So much so that I have mine up for sale here currently. At least I'll have some fond memories but I just spend more time with the HE-400s.

Yeah... I too get the hissing with vali. Didn't bother me that much though. I use turntable quite alot so I'm allmost immune to background noice :)  I also sold my w1000x. Great headphone but could not compete with modded dx1000. I wish I had afford to keep both though... but a new amp is not going to pay for itself. Got my mind set on had-audiolab maestral III.

You can even see in this thread a few weeks ago I really liked my W1000Xs. But having the comparison of the other headphones left me feeling like I couldnt afford to keep both. It's too late to ask Santa for new iems for work. Unfortunately money always gets me in the end.

I just don't listen to enough rock music, which these headphones are great for.

They were not the all-rounder closed-back I was seeking though,,, And for their price, well, let's just say I expected more :P

Pff did u mod ur W1000x, still comparing it to a modded Flag Ship is a little un fair :3 but I think it could have held it's own fairly well. Well as long as your still in the Wood Closed Back club it's cool

If you didn't mod it it's hard to appreciate it's full potential.

With L3000 Pads and Purrin Mods it s a nice can! I liked it with the Vali as well, and it was a touch sensitive to the hum

and shame on all of you for selling your W1000x :[ am I the only owner left on this thread >.>
