So once again I'm finding the Strengths and weakness of my modded w1000x. I TONED THE BASS DOWN on my pair. And I quite like it that way, that said in my modding I also lost a smidge of my low mids... not a big fan of that one

that said, the upper mids are really nice... how ever I'm still itching for a nice tube for these! Still planning on trying the Vali which I think will work very nicely imo

After I get teh Vali, going to get my hm801 fixed [it's actually 3 years olds... eww $100 to get it replaced >.>] then it's onto a RSA Sr71B after that I think I'll venture into Balanced Tube Land <3

Still with... airy'r vocalists. Sarah Jorasz, and Dai Quing Tana, the w1000x is pretty magical.

With deeper volcalists like Adelle not so much...  and Dai Quing's voice has a great depth in it, listening to her now, some REALLY nice bodied mids around 200-300 hrz

That said, I do like her with Lisa Ekdahl as well who has a playfully deep voice. How ever the DT 880 is still the best with Adelle it seems [Oh yea I finally got her Live Album... much better than all her recorded junk]

This are still the sexiest rock headphones I've ever heard to date... so that's good <3 but the W1000x... the poor girl needs a little help with deeper vocals from time to time... hoping the Vali will have just enough of the umph!

I traded my W1000x and I'm missing their signature for rock although I can't fault the AD2k for the amazing speed and mids...

I kinda regret buying this headphone in the groupbuy >.> The price for these is $370 now on buydig

It's quite ok because I believe at one point of time we all paid more for these compared to the advertised price now.  I'm a big amazon shopper but at the time buydig had them for $399 and was cheaper than amazon so I purchased them through buydig.

But, you know what?  Listening to these on a daily base's I would still buy them even if it were $499-$599.  IMHO.  Call me crazy but I don't care, my ears likes them…

Be happy…

And how is the Vali doing with the W1000x? Really curious as I am currently looking for a budget proposition to go with my upcoming W1000x ;-).

Vali is not hear yet... I think it SHOULD b ok. I used my W1000x with a Noisy tube in the past... wasn't a HUGE deal imo. The 42ohm resitance on the w1k is abou 6x as much as teh Vali's Output impedance, so there shouldn't be any issues there. And from my past use with again a noisy tube, it's only noticeable if your listening to music on the loud side, and during quiet passages. And honestly for $100... who freaking cares if it's a little noisy during quiet passages... I've got enough white noise around me, like the sounds of my Fan and my screaming roomates. I'm used to tuneing that noise out even with quiet music xD

but I will totally let you guys know when I get it!

Also with regard to noise and the possibility of too much gain, I'm using my PB1 which is running about 7 gain, 7 times more than the w1000x needs, and I find the voume control more than sufficent. An keep in mind my PB1 is a little more than twice as powerful than the vali, so I don't forsee TO many volume or noise realted issues!

Now I just have to wait >.>

@Mshenay Thanks, eagerly await your impressions. Meanwhile, Garage1217's Project Ember is also worth looking at, I suppose!(though not at the same price points :-() Has anybody already tried the W1000x/Project Ember combination. Reading through this thread somehow makes me feel that tubes would be the way to go with the W1000x!

I have to admit I do like the W1000x with warmer amps and sources, espically since I modded mine

I think AT headphones in general pair well with slightly warmer amplifiers.  While not all tube amplifiers are warm, most tube amplifiers do pair well with my AT's.

For anyone who owned *and liked* W5000 Raffinato, are W1000x a step down or more like a side grade.

Mike at headfonia feels that they are a significant downgrade

Moving up from the W1000X to the W3000ANV and the W5000 will put you in a totally different league. Even though the W1000X has been a relatively popular headphone in its own right, I soon find out that comparing it to the two bigger brothers, the 1000X is so far back it’s like bringing a knife to a gunfight. So perhaps this comparison will be more about the W3000ANV and the W5000, since there is no point in making detailed comparisons if the W1000X will lose on almost all aspects (except perhaps wallet-friendliness factor).

The W5000/W3000ANV vs W1000X, briefly.
I’ve had the W5000 for a week before I got the W3000ANV, and when I took the W5000 to my friend Peter who owns the W1000X I am using for this comparison, I found out that there was no competition: the W5000 totally obliterates the W1000X. Not only in the aspect of technicalities and refinement which is to be expected of, but surprisingly, also in the bass section (previously I’ve heard that the W1000X betters the W5000 in the bass). The W5000 hits with a stronger slam and a weightier body than the W1000X, it was not even a close comparison.

I've never found W5000 sounding thin or lacking bass or body, contrary, bass level in my setup and with the way they fit my head is on par with HD800, the mids are quite colored, but in nice euphonic way. Still my favorite closed, but with current super friendly prices on W1000X was wondering if it's worthwhile to introduce them into my collection as for use at work, but I am certainly not looking for something that is inferior to W5000 to the point of unusability.

Thoughts?

Once more, W5000 require some work to sound their best and certainly not for everyone's taste, so if you never liked W5000, there is little point to comment. Thanks.

well what kind of work, and YES stock W1000x is TERRIBLE... ugh I hated it...not to mention fit is horrible stock. YOu need to bend ur w1000x to fit ur noggin

ehm that said, modding the w1000x makes it a whole new monster... and the ONLY issue I have with the W1000x Post mod is the treble. That said, what does the W5000 need as far as work goes? And honestly the W1000x is the most neutral of the 3, or it has the least color. Granted a modded W5000 might surpass a modded w1000x...

i need to try thr W5k at a meet though before I commit to buying it honestly

The amount of work?

Well, that would be:

- Bending headband

- Properly adjusting earpads (they rotate, stitching should be against screw on the cup at 5 o'clock)

- After putting heaphone on, slightly rotate them forward so they kind of "lock" on ears, creating best seal (that is actually explained in L3000 user manual)

- I have also replaced my pads with L3000, they seem to provide a better seal (or may be my original pads are worn out)

- Amplification, can't stress this part enough, but despite being low impedance and easy to drive, Raffinato are extremely picky when it comes to amplification. The ones feeding the most current into low impedance work better, otherwise they just sound anemic. GS-1 with new Dynalo+ modules works great (original Dynalo was okay but not stellar), AURALiC Taurus perhaps drives them to their best, at least from what I've heard to day.

Oh yea that sounds like my W1000x in a nut shell. And yes I learned that "Rotate forward for better seal"trick for my W1000x, my W1000x is modded with L3000 pads as well. I'm actually in need of a good amp for my W1000x,

Honestly the W5000 sounds a LOT like my modded W1000x.... so I should be able to master the W5k with no issues. Anyways going back to amps

yea my w1000x LOVED my Matrix M Stage, she HATES my NFB 10ES2 [sounds to sterile] and she LOVES mh Hm801 and PB1 combo, hoping the Schiit vali will be a nice match for the W1000x... until I can balance her and drive her through a nice balanced tube... going ba;anced did WONDERS for my HE 400 and my DT 880. So before I even THINK about the W5k, I need to find the PERFECT Balanced Amp for my W1k, a fellow on the LD MK VI+ thread just got his w1000x balanced and he's loving it

But I really need to audition the W5k, agains't my modded W1kx... I don't think the modded W1000x will b out shined by the Stock W5k all that much, Bill P [who owned all 3 W eries ath cans] felt while the W5k was better, the price differance, again'st the MOdded W1kx really out shone the improvements. That and at teh end of the day, the w1000x was the most neutral [at least once it was modded Purrins Mod]

SO I suggest you try and mod a W1000x, and slap some L3000 pads on there and join the club :D one day I might end up on the w5k club my self!
