Problems at work

I have worked for a large organization for 5 years. The person responsible for training me for certain aspects of the job was /is 2 level below. He proved to be very hostile from the begining. He was impatient and degrading in his manner. Often calling out the slightest mistake across the office. I have caught him in some major mistakes but just put a note on his desk to rectify it. He sreamed at me one time for the smallesst thing and I finally yelled back. I let him know, I was through playing games at work and this was unaccepatable. The situation escalated in my bosses office with him screming and at one point charging towards me to hit me. He stoped himself and I quickly got out of the office. He ignored me for close to a year before my boss intervined and said enough is a enough. He has not spoken to people in the past and is currently not speaking to 3 people in our department of 35. I am on his do not talk to list.

He had threated me saying he "could make my work life very difficult for me if I messed with him" when I had professionally confronted him about his aggression towards me prior to the aforementioned escalation. We shoock hands and have been acting professionally towards each other for a 2 years

Lately ,not sure why he has become increasingly hostile toward me. He is at his desk for only half the day and the bosses assisatant says it is being noticed. He is hanging around other department, sometimes on other floors.
He is not talking to me around the office and walks past me on the train and in the cafateria as if I were not alive, completely ignoring my "good mornings". Friday I said "good morning" and he replied "yeah right".

My boss does not want to get invoved in this "petty BS". I am starting to get incresingly concered about me safety as now he has taken to not moving a little out of the way when he is at the copier and I am trying to get my print outs. There is a 300 LB women and I get by her with no problems.

I mentioned to my bosses assistant that the work atmospherer is becoming increasing hostile and I was advised by my friend who is an atorney to address my concerns with human resources. I said I would not do so without talking to the deparment head. The deparment head clearly does not want HR involved because his assistant told me the situation will be taken care of Monday. Its Sunday and I have no idea W.T.F to expect.

The rape sequence from Deliverance have been flashing in my mind. BUt only.. I am Ned Bettey

Any HR people or Legal experts. I sure can use some advice. Please state your qualifications when posting

Thanks

Seen a lot of such situations, working in a huge multinational corporation for 16 years, responsible for operations/sales for a certain geografical region.

1. Never put forward your superior level of education (it is yours advantage - no need to blow horns about it in the open)

2. If somebody is appointed to train you for certain aspects of the job, learn to listen first (nomatter of his inferiour education level). People have feelings, and some can be quite frustrated for what ever reason - so do not put additional burning oil on such wounds).

3. Always try to resolve problems with the person in question. Third party resolution is the worst possible solution. Buy the guy a beer and talk to him, try to find out why is he acting hostile towards you.
Try to respect everybody by default if you ever expect to be respected by others. Do not forget - people, we are not machines.

4. After you have done your best and you see no chance of improvement then :
"never struggle with a pig, you both get dirty, but the pig likes it "
If possible avoid him, or ask to be moved to an other department or in worst case find a new job.

Good Luck !

I'm not an HR or Legal expert but having worked in an office for over 20 years, I say just wait until Monday to see what happens. It sounds like they are planning to address the situation. They may be doing something about the fact that he is not at his desk for half the day, maybe terminating him. Regardless, if you don't like the outcome or the problem persists, then by all means speak to HR about it.

As far as the department head not wanting HR involved, HR must be involved when it comes to any actions or situations regarding employees, especially for legal reasons. I will say though that managers, supervisors, etc., do not always like employees talking with HR, especially behind their back, but there is nothing they can do about it. If you feel you need to speak with HR, let your department head know that you are going to do so and explain why. If he tries to disuade you, do it anyway. He may resent you for it but you have every right to do so, especially if you feel threatened by another employee. Even if he tells you it has been resolved, talk to HR anyway to confirm it. If this other guy does get fired, then of course you don't need to do anything.

He may be bi-polar.
If they fire him, get an order of protection against him, because maybe he might come after you for getting him fired.

If that doesnt work, DJ Mocok said he would kick his butt for you.

Hope you don't work at the post office. I've been freelance my entire life and stories like this make riding those waves and the various other costs seem very tolerable in comparison. Truly, that must be a terrible position to be in. I'm sorry for your struggle and hope you can get clarity through council, revelation, or whatever it takes, to turn things around. I'm obviously in no position to advise you, but just wanted to offer a word of support. Good on'ya for seeking advice/help to resolve things. Good luck!

Be smart, don't do anything physical. Act professional.

If things don't go well on Monday resign yourself to the fact that this organization is pretty shabby and there's no reason to provide your professional skills working for them.

NOTE: I don't condone violence but sometimes it's the only way to deal with certain people.
If this were the play ground it would already be resoved

I think he is wants me to wack him.

There are many... thats why I am still there;
Over paid
underworked
usually low stress
great hours
more benefits than dating a super model
Pension that will pay me close to my full sal
20 minute comute
8 weeks holiday
.........

But I will always act professionally. My concern is he might push me to provoke me.

Not if he comes in with a semi-automatic rifle...

It's sad that in this day and age, you're scared to fire someone for fear of retaliation.

Being a boss myself, I sometimes think about certain people and wonder how they would react to being fired.
