iPhone hardware vastly improved?

Hum. Quick question.

I used to hate on the iPod phenomenon because I didn't understand why so many people liked it despite its crappy sound (just my opinion, so don't skewer me if you disagree). I mean...I understand Apple has great marketing. I just didn't get why people were so cow-like in their 'ooh it's so cool' mentality (again, i apologize if i offend)

I received a 1st gen iPod touch as a Christmas present when it first came out and I continued to hate on iPods. It was fun to surf the web with in class and play games and i admit that the iPhone is an awesome phone, but the sound was unexciting, there was no customizable eq, and I noticed some fuzziness/distortion when I tried any of the preset eqs. (I use UM2's).

Just the other day, I used my friend's iphone to listen to some music and I was caught off guard. I was expecting crap, but it sounded surprisingly good. I know they had been replacing the hardware, but I didn't know it had improved this much.

Anyone else notice this? Are any of my observations/facts wrong?

Yeah, basically from the 2G iPod Touch/3G iPhone onwards, it's been widely reported that the audio hardware is a lot better than the 1st gen stuff.

Yea i agree, IPT 2nd gen has surprisingly good synergy with my ES3x. I found the 3rd gen to be a bit bassy tho. 1st gen was just garbage XD

I get pretty impressive sound quality from my 3GS with my Westone 3s. Far improved from what I get with my Nano or Classic.
