What to build next? - Page 2

You can't really go wrong with the Mini3 or the PimetaV2. They're both primo amps. I've no introduction to the carrie but if it includes the Mini3's topology, it should be pretty good.

The Mini3 is a bit more integrated (specifically because its designed to fit in a single case with everything hooked directly to the board, rather simple final stage) and also uses a metal case and has the option of getting professionally made panels, these were my attractions to it.

Yeah, I think that's a major thing for me as well--the case of the Mini3 with the pre-drilled/engraved panels. Which means I'll probably end up building that.

Anybody? Here's a link. Is the kit price reasonable compared to buying all of the parts separately? I just need to add the cost of the custom end panels and I should have everything I need...right?

I personally prefer picking and piecing my own parts all together, but I've gotten to where I prefer specific parts. If you don't have a preference for specific audio parts in given circumstances, a kit will probably do you.

That's a pretty decent price for the kit and you'll probably spend a little more on all the parts individually (albeit that could go higher or lower, depending on your selection).

Hmm okay. I'll probably pick out some parts and see if the shipping from different stores will cost me much more than the kit.

Having never built the mini3, I would still recommend the PIMETA. It doesn't have on-board battery space, but it does have on-board support for higher-end potentiometers which is nice. I like my PIMETA v1 so much (with AD8610/8620) that I'm planning on powering it with a σ11 from a wallwart (one of my many future projects.)

I think either one would be a good intro to PCB and denser layouts from a CMOY. I don't think you can go wrong.

Hmm...How'd you go about the case with yours? Did you use the serpac enclosure he recommends?

I think I've decided to get the Mini3 kit from Glass Jar : price is good and it's a whole lot less hassle. I'll just get that and the custom engraved plates...anything else I need?

Also, while I'm getting stuff from there...should I get the BantamDAC kit too? I was planning on buildling that or the GrubDAC next. Is one really 'better' than the other?

I've heard both and they're pretty similar - technically, the Grub "should" sound better because it has no output caps, but it just depends on what your ears like. There will also be a kit of the Grub soon from Beezar.

Any idea on how soon for the kit? I've seen that also. I may end up just building one of each

I like the GrubDAC from a datasheet perspective (see my thread here).

The GrubDAC uses a Wolfson DAC and is directly coupled, which I'm more biased to, but that's my preference, not necessarily a unifying fact

Thanks for the reply.

I may just wait (if it won't be too long) for the grubDAC kits to come out (and maybe a step-by-step on their website...but it seems pretty straightforward) and just build a mini3 now.
