Thanks for the plentiful responses! I will keep the gold, i'm actually glad I don't have to go back to re-inlay a tooth, blech.

Cheers

A metallic taste in your mouth is usually blood.

Gold shouldn't have much of a taste.

Here's some info on fillings. I'm surprised they actually would have used gold fillings given their description.
Dental Filling | Tooth Filling | Cavity Filling | Silver Filling
I went to the dentist a few months ago and needed a couple of fillings. I don't know exactly what material they used but it is tooth colored and my dentist referred to it as "natural blend". She also replaced one of my old silver fillings which was very noticeable.

I've always thought gold fillings look tacky.

Cool, thanks for the link! Hmm.. well if that info is to be trusted/used, I should probably just leave it as-is. I agree with ph0rk that it looks tacky, but on the other hand, it's so far back that people probably won't even see it unless i'm trying to eat their face off. I didn't realize that gold lasts the longest too, that surprises me since gold is soft and maleable.

I personally would go back having them re-do with porcelain.
Because 1) since that is what you both agreed to use, and 2) because it blend in much better color wise with the rest of your teeth.

Or unless you are, you know, practical. No one's going to see your molars, which makes gold a superior option as it will last much longer and do less damage to the surrounding teeth.

It last the longest because it is softer and more malleable. It conforms to the existing structure better and will merely deform under stresses that will crack and chip ceramics.

You know you want to.

Is there actually anything wrong with your current gold filling (besides the metallic taste you mention - I too agree it is probably your blood). If not I wouldnt bother with it.

Gold is the best choice for molars. They should have told you, but they made the right choice, in my opinion.
