Synergy is King

Thread Starter
Over the last few years I was continually upgrading my DAPs and headphones as everyone else here does. I would buy a new DAP or headphone in an effort to upgrade that link in the chain. Like many here though I would test it mainly with my FOTM DAP or headphone. Example: I would test new DAP against old DAP with my favorite IEM at that time. Then I would buy a new IEM and compare that to my old IEM using my NEW favorite DAP thinking it was the superior DAP and not really compare them both with the old DAP. I hope your following me.

Today I decided to pull out my old Cowon U2 and listen with my Triple.fi 10s. WOW. I was blown away at the detail that I never heard with my old IEMS. I had retired the Cowon when I bought my Sony A818 and loved it's intimate sound. The thing was, is that I never had a pair of IEMs that truly showed me the clarity of the Cowon. Many of my old IEMs were dynamics and apparently could not give me the high end extension that my Triple.fis can. Unfortunately this is making me want to buy a new Cowon with more space (thank God I forgot my wallet today).

If you are feeling a little bored with your current set-up, take out some of your older gear and try out some pairings that you may have not listened to before. You may be happily surprised at the Synergy you may find.

I agree with you that synergy is an important factor. According to some reputable head-fiers, Final Audio 1601 sounds like crap with almost everything you feed them, but a Sony DAP or a GS Voyager do the trick to make them wonderful

I did not say 'crap' with anything but, but the 1601 loves thick bass and the iPod and my other sources cannot do it. Thankfully I had a Sony A828 to bring them up to bliss.

But yeah, in certain circumstances, earphones need synergy. I don't like to start thinking about portable players and synergy though simply because it opens up a can of worms: a player should perform well across the board. You shouldn't need to buy a player for iems, a player for large Ω phones (unless you need volume), even my iPod touch does a remarkable job across the board.

So... other companies that target users of this headphone or that headphone really just have less to offer for more price.

Great advice, I second that.
I love trying out different pairings between DAPs and IEMs and have found some unexpected and amazing synergy on several occasions.

Just to name a few:
- Sony A845 + FAD 1601 (kudos to shigzeo)
- Sony A845 + RE1
- Nuforce Icon Mobile + IE8
- AMP3 + ATH-EM700Ti
- Cowon i9 + most Playaz IEMs
- Nexus Blueultimate + Shure Attenuator + SE530
...
