Some help regarding CK2III, HD650, HD595, and a DAC

Hello everyone, its been a long time since I posted here last, which was when you all helped me decide on hd595's and a mini^3 amp. Its been a while since, then, and I've decided it's time for me to upgrade both my phones and amp.

I have been debating between akg701/2's and the hd650, but one of my friends decided he was going to get the k702's, so I have settled on the hd650's (so we can trade etc and try both). I haven't actually placed an order yet, so my mind might still get changed to something completely different. My budget for the phones is about $400 taxed + shipped

Next, the amp (which is what the real question is about, hence posting in the amp section). I have pretty much settled on (as in I ordered all the parts last night) the CK2III, largely becasue I wanted another diy project, and because I couldn't actually find parts/boards for what seemed to be the only other options in the price range (dynalo, CTH). In any case, lots of good reviews on the CK2III, so please don't make me feel bad about the purchase at this point, lol.

ANYHOW, to my question: There are several options on the CK2III which I am unsure of. Firstly, gain: the options are 9x and 4.1x. Which gain should I use if I plan on getting an hd650 soon? Will that same gain work ok for the 595's as well (which is the 50 ohm version)? If not, would it be possible to somehow add a gain switch to the amp? (there are 4 resistors that need to swapped, so maybe a 4pdt switch and some wires) Or would the switch and accompanying wires somehow reduce the performance of the amp?

The other option quoted from amb site: "Instead of the listed 10µF bipolar electrolytic capacitors, you may use 1µF 63V polyester film capacitors with 0.200" lead spacing instead. You will also have to increase R49, R51 to 100KΩ and R15, R39 to 3.01MΩ with this option."

I couldn't tell from the way it was worded if this was an option for convenience (in case the default caps were out of stock, which they were at digi-key) or if the option was actually a performance increase. I ended up buying parts for both options, so I have time to decide up until I actually get to soldering those parts.

My next question is about source. I am mostly using my computer as a source / DAC. I am mostly using my computer as a source, although I occasionally might use other sources such as my zune HD (although that would still be at my desk). I have a Claro Halo XT in my computer, and want to know if it is an acceptable source (obviously using the line-out, not the amped headphone port). The way I see it, I have 2 options: Stick with the claro, and get some better opamps or get an external DAC. What do you all recommend?

Gamma2 DAC
how do you feel about the M^3 amp? you can build it to select different gain instead of the bass boost function. the CKK3 is good also.

I was under the impression that the M^3 cost a lot more, although I never priced it out myself. Can it be built for a similar price? (~$200). I don't mind maybe selling the CK2III (since I already ordered it) if the m^3 can be built at a similar price.

i might build an m3 for the s---ts and giggles. i priced it out at between $100-125 without the sigma11 and enclosure. i already have a large assortment of OPA627 and other chips, extra heat sinks from my b22 build. I would build mine without bass boost. I priced out a sigma11 at ~$70 with no trafo (i have an extra from my DAC) or enclosure was going to use SIP sockets for the R10 and zener to make the voltage adjustable for all purpose including powering my netbook. I know if i actually came to building it i would probably shell out the extra dough for a DACT pot. Hell maybe ill make the CK2III too just to see what it sounds like.

Get both

Haha, maybe. I jsut looked at AMB's gamma2 page, and it seems like a fun a project. Do you, by any chance, happen to know approximately how much the whole thing will cost. I understand I will have to build both the gamma1 and gamma2 since the 2 is an expansion for the 1.

Another quick question, will the gamma2 benefit a lot form a sigma25 psu. sigma11 is way out of my price range for the psu, but if a wallwart won't cut it I can get a sigma25. I'd like to save some money somewhere though, already spending a lot more than I originally intended :P

build the sigma11 one resistor at a time if you have to. You can always use it for anything (powering other amps, dacs, netbooks, squeezebox etc). It's actually a useful investment.

you are bad for my wallet :P
I was having difficulty finding the opa2365 and src4192 in stock anywhere, but then I realized I could get free samples from TI using my .edu email address. Win. It's back ordered till may 8, but that's a whole lot better than the 15 weeks listed at mouser and digi-key.

EDIT: wow, I jsut priced the 2 boards, and it comes out to $75 for gamma1 Full++, $65 for Gamma2, plus the case/panels ($10 + $48) for a total of ~200 + shipping + tax. Not as bad as I thought it would be.

BTW, anyone know where to find the oscillator crystal (24.576MHz 3.3V CMOS oscillator Crystek C3391-24.576 or 24.576MHz 3.3V CMOS oscillator EuroQuartz 24.576MHz XO91050UITA or similar) in the states. The only one i could find in stock was from farnell/newark which in the uk warehouse only, so $20 shipping for the one part.

I need some quick help on figuring out what transformer to use if I do build a sigma11. AMB says "9V (or dual 9V in parallel)" if I want 5.1v output. AMB recommended to use the Amveco TE62000 series transformers. I found them at digi-key, but there are about 10 different 9v transformers, and I have no idea which one I need. If someone could help me out, that what be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
