BHSE or Woo WES? - Page 3

I imported a ~15.000$+ amplifier from asia to europe and I only had to pay 180 euro VAT/Import duties, but I couldve been very lucky

I noticed in Belgium that if something is shipped by regular postal service (so not DHL or the like) that you pay an additional administrative fee on top of the VAT and import duties.
Ordered a pair of boots from California for the missus in December for $200 + shipping and had to pay 80€ to customs.
Too bad I don't have the receipt anymore as I don't know if it was a fixed fee or a percentage.

It all comes down to this: 1$ = 1€ when you order equipment from the US as a European. If you buy (or could buy in this case) the same equipment in stores here, it comes down to the same pice, sometimes even more depending on profit margins.

You could take a weekend trip to the States with a half empty suitcase and look holier than Mother Mary herself when you pass customs. Even with the ticket price deducted you'd still have a profit and enjoyed a nice little holiday.

It appears that the options are simple:

Get a BHSE and pay $5000, then wait 2 years until it is ready and pay $300 shipping/insurance + $950(19% VAT) + $335(6.5% Import duties) for a total of: $6585.00

Get a maxed WES (I couldnt order the non-maxed) pay $7,780 wait two months and pay $350(shipping/insurance) + $1478(19% VAT) + $505(6,5% Import tax) for a total of: $10,113

THIS SOUNDS CRAZY!!! ARENT THERE ANY OPTIONS IN EUROPE!!! ????
YES, it's riscky but in most cases do work

1) Declare the WES as a 200$ amp, VAT will be MUCH lower
I'm sure it will not be lost
Also you can find those tubes much cheaper in other places.
I personaly would buy only WES + upgrades (without tubes) + declare a much lower price.

2) Fly to states, buy a WES, come back with it

3) Or a Coriolan 2 ...

Wow! At those ridiculous prices I would get a used 717 shipped to you as a gift for 1/10th price and be happy with it

Yep, my idea exactly!
You know an Omega 2 + 727 amp costs 5000€ new here?
When I'm ready to buy one I'm gonna take a litlle weekend trip me thinks, it's half the price in euros in the US.

btw Monsieurguzel, when you sell that nice Stax set you bought this week right before I could, feel free to send me a pm
Damn, I would have loved that set! Have fun with it though!

Haha, yes that was me I think I saw that sale post less than 5 minutes after it posted and expressed lots of interest in getting the setup. I was lucky since the Mk2 and 717 was exactly what I was looking for. Will let you know what I think of it compared to my Woo5 + HD800 setup

Please do let me know, would be a pretty good comparison for me!
And yes, the set was very much to my liking too.
I was the second to pm, a few hours later though, and said I'd buy it straight away, no hassles.
But me living across the pond might have lessened my chances I'm afraid.
Anyway, I comforted myself by ordering a Luxman for my dynamics, but since I can only get it beginning of July at the earliest, probably more likely end of August after the holidays I comforted myself again with a Phonitor. That one should be delivered next week.
Now I just need to figure out how to tell my wife. I think I'll start with the Phonitor and wait a few weeks to explain the rest.
But she felt sorry for me missing out on the Stax set, guess that's usable ...

Well, you can wait until it's finished then buy a flight ticket to the US and bring it back.

And since it's still two years from now and my dynamic setup will be complete by then I will be happy to come along and buy me a standard Stax set while I'm there!

Well, it didnt feel so bad when I saw my taxes being used properly, which they kind of were, that is until the bank bailouts (ING, ABN-AMRO, Fortis)... After that I feel also sorry for me.

I fly often to NY and San Diego, transporting the amp myself will probably be my best option. Still I cannot believe a BHSE would take so long, who waits that long? No doubt that really high-end headphones are an ultra-small niche... I had no clue it was so difficult... now I been thinking I might be better off putting the ~$7000 in a new dac for my speaker system....

2 years is a terribly long time for sure.
And who knows what new amp might come out by then, a Stax T1 replacement?
I really wonder what the reason it takes so long could be.
Trust me on this, the import rates you pay are nothing compared to the ones we pay here in Iceland. Something like the ESX would be easy enough to get any custom amp maker to build as it is no more complicated then a classic EL34 based speaker amp.

I presume you meant the T2 (006t and 600 are the T1 replacements) and we know for a fact that Stax will never manufacture anything that complicated again. If they were going to we would never had gotten permission to build a DIY version of their design.
