Cowon J3 Impressions Thread - Page 65

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised at your experience.  Maybe the following questions will help shed some light here:

1.  What headphones are you using?

2.  Are you using an external/portable amp?

3.  Are your music files lossless or 320 kbps?

4.  Have you played with the BBE settings?

5.  Are there weird settings on the EQ that are throwing off the sound?

1. iam using brainwavz M1

2. no amp

3. Most of my files are of good quality, the problem is that although the sound is really great, full soundstage and clear (A lot better than my Nokia 5530), i find my self bored when using the J3. When i tried "deeply disturbed- infected mushroom" and compared it with my computer which suppose to has Realtek high definition audio driver(?), whatever that suppose to be i was disappointed. Through my PC i don't have to keep the volume up, to feel the thumb and keep the treble in the front.

You can check the song i am saying if you have the time (here it is)

At the start, when Leonidas says.. this is sparta biggrin.gif. His voice fades behind (source problem). In my PC its not so bad, but on my j3 its really noticeable. Maybe because the treble is more recessed in J3.

4. BBE effects make things better, but i have the feeling that they only cover the problem. I prefer normal eq, or simply a bit more treble-centric.

Interesting.  I does sound like you just need a different source device - although your headphones could be better.  It's possible that the Cowon device shows some of the flaws in your IEMs.

The re-sale on a J3 should be pretty descent.  Good luck with your next choice.

triportsad.gif I dont have the time for trying to sell it, and then find a new  device. I guess i give it more time. I was just curious if anyone else noticed that.

You havent auditioned J3?

Not the J3, but the S9 which supposedly sounds the same.

So what did you think?

Well i am listening the same song over and over again. I listen it through my nokia 5530 and i must say... it sucked Deeply tongue_smile.gif. The sound is dark, thin and un-realistic, almost fake. Its like you have a little man screaming in a Dr pepper tin. biggrin.gif

Its day and night. I noticed that my Cowon j3 although i say lacks liveness, Maybe its because the sound is very natural and neutral. It has the same quality with my PC and maybe even better. Just that my PC is a bit more aggressive but less natural by a tiny.

Maybe the cowon J3 is more sensitive and that is why it reacts this way. Lets dont forget that a desktop PC has a lot more power to use. I don't know.. maybe.. what do you think?

EDIT: more and more i think i over reacted. i play different songs and i am finding it hard to chose which signature i like the most. Both are top though. Maybe i felt that way, because i didnt know desktops can play music so well.

J3 is a very nice DAP  , chances are the bad sound was a bi-product of the badly recorded music.

You may wanna upgrade your IEM's also - see it as an post-xmas gift to yoyrself

Yup.

Hello Algelopsaro!

Your observation is very relevant and, in a sense, correct.

Here I make some observations:

1 - Strength and weight of sound - I do not know your PC, but it is quite natural that the sound from your PC (even an onboard sound card) has more weight and life than the Cowon J3, because of his higher output power . On the other hand, you lose a large part of the definition that J3 is capable of delivering;

2 - Brainwavz M1 - This is an amazing headphone, that costs very little, however, is greatly enhanced by a high output power, which is the case with your PC. This headphone really does not have a good synergy with the Cowon J3. He plays his best when the source is more "warm" instead of J3, which has a sound more to the analytical side. To my ears, he plays phenomenal when used with a Nationite S:Flo2, with the headphone-out;

3 - Cowon J3 - One of the best players in the market, which benefits greatly with balanced armature headphones with high sensitivity and lossless files. With this setup, you can listen the resolution and other qualities that only high-end setups are able to offer. Want to hear something unforgettable? Try a properly equalized Cowon J3 + Shure SE530 with Comply Foam + Black Sabbath. Believe-me, it is to cry... wink.gif

4 - Equalizer - The Cowon J3 is a player to mess with the equalizer. If not your case, I suggest choosing something else, eg, a Sansa Fuze, which plays very well even at flat EQ and works very well with the Brainwavz M1, as it has a warmer sound than the Cowon J3. No more, do not be afraid of messing up the equalizer on your J3!

5 - Mind burn-in - I suggest you stop listening to your music, either by PC or by Cowon, at least one week. After that, you can return to her J3 and, as I said above, play a lot with the EQ options on this player. Every device needs a mental adjustment period and, with the Cowon J3, this is no different.

I hope these comments are helpful to you, remembering that I have all the equipment mentioned (except the two S: Flo2 I had and sold) and that these are personal opinions, which you or others may disagree freely.

Cheers,

Peter

Also the sound has more liveness. I notice that on other songs too. It seems that my j3 doesnt make me feel the felling of wanting to listen the song more than my pc. Its actually the opposite.

I am using brainwavz M1 FYI.

dfkt probably.  He owns both.

Finally received the J3 I bought off another head-fi'er and loaded it up with my flac files.

Initial impression: SO MUCH SOUNDSTAGE! atsmile.gif

It's like I've been looking through the peephole and somebody just opened the door... Instrument separation is great and I love the punch and attack it pumps through my Atrio M5's. Mids are better too, using the BBE Viva setting. All this is compared to my rockboxed 5.5gen ipod, playing flac files.

EDIT: Embedded flac artwork is fine as soon as you use flac files that actually HAVE embedded artwork. Doooh!

Thank you for the information and your time. You helped me a lot. Now i know what rout to follow.

1. What you say about, Strength and weight of sound is exactly what i hear. J3 is a bit more clean and analytical.

2. About my brainwavz now. That is a disappointment to hear. biggrin.gif The thing is that i cant spend constantly money to test my preferences, so i have to be careful what i buy. Also at the moment i don't intent to buy such an expensive iem as shures530. I might invest to fischer audio DB-02. Its an BA. So you think its a good combo right? Is the bass less than brainwavz M1?

3. i find it easier to have 320kbps files, because they are tag editor -riendly and more organizable. I only have FLAC  files for certain albums. You think i should invest more to loseless?

4. i like messing with the eq but only a bit. To make a flat sound a bit more treble-mind and a bit more alive and fun. Only by a bit because i like the things clean and clear. cool.gif

I've got an Arrow piggy-backing my J3. It's a dream when using the combo with my big Senns. However, my Shure IEMs benefit too. I don't need to amp the Shures, but there isn't a better way that I've heard to get good bass to the 530s. The Arrow+J3 is a good pairing. Aesthetically, it's hard to beat. The two form factors mate well and if you get a black J3, it makes for a sexy, stealthy, low profile portable setup.

+1.  My J3 and Arrow combo is a match made in heaven.
