so i solved the problem with some of my newly added flac files not playing/bricking my J3
i installed the 2.29 firmware and i formatted the J3
everything works like new
i guess there must have been some J3 bug
so i'd say just do what i did and no need to rename flac to fla etc
re-install the firmware + format the J3
what's going to replace this now that stopped making this one?

actually i just bought a 2nd J3 (16GB) from a fellow head-fier here
in case my J3 broke down i wanted to have the best backup choice (ie another J3)
and for 90 pounds , i don't think i should pass this opportunity

I tried flashing to 2.29 and then formatting. Guess .fla is my only choice
this may be one of the last bump for this amazing DAP
do we know if there is a new successor coming up soon ?
...when I was looking for a new DAP I opted for the J3 over the D3 Plenue...superior battery life and a stable OS won out. I heard rumor here and there about a successor, but nothing concrete.
Yeah, if someone needs to do a necro-bump when the next part of the model line comes out, feel free. I'm sure most of us would appreciate it. I've had to glue my S9 up a bit... I can't find a player I like as much. I need the BBE MP and BBE ViVA and other EQ's, buttons that don't lock with the screen, and OLED display, custom firmware, and great sound. I've only found this combo in Cowon players. Perhaps a good Android phone with a good DAC chip would work with a BBE EQ app or something similar.
a 16-gb appeared on the FS thread
good price too , 100 pounds (=125 euros)
I would buy it , but i already have 2 of these so maybe 3 are too many
I just recently got one of these on ebay and i'm loving it so far.
However, i've searched all over the place for how to create playlist for it on a mac/linux and I can't seem to find anything
If there isn't any way to automate it, could someone post the format of a playlist and where to put it? I wouldn't be totally opposed to doing it manually.
I'm a recent J3 convert. Bought it used (32gb) here at Head-fi about a week ago. The J3 is replacing a 2+ year old daily driver, S:flo 2 which in many ways I now regret selling.
Just speaking of unaffected, flat playback ... the S:flo 2 was a bit better in regards to sonics ... better instrument separation ... better soundstage and ultimately, better resolution. As mentioned in the S:flo thread ... upon first listen to the J3, it's like a certain degree of definition was gone from the music and this resulted in my trying to raise the volume of the J3 as a solution but it's just a fundamental difference in the architectures, I think ...
That said ...
The J3 is still a pretty sweet sounding player (close second to the S:flo 2 and better than any other DAPS I've heard) ... the key for me was disabling all Jet Effects other than the slightest bit of EQ to compensate for the default, somewhat hyper accurate/neutral signature of my Shure SE535. No BBE effects .. just the EQ. And now that my brain has adjusted, I'm really enjoying the player ...
On one hand, being 32 gb native and with the SD card slot, it can potentially be made into a pretty decently sized storage player. I'm using a 16gb card at the moment but will soon get a 32gb ...
I also really love the form factor and that it's so freakishly light weight...
But what's really sold me on the J3 is the user interface...
Mind you, I'm coming from 2+ years of using the S:flo 2, which is a genuinely remarkable bit of sonic engineering but which leaves GOBS to be desired in regards to "useability", battery life and interface... the J3 in comparison and just regarding interface is like a freaking Ferrari of well considered design and function ... I've been using it daily for about five days now and I never once looked at a manual and I'm already a fluid expert in every aspect of it's interface functions. I just poked around, looked at the various symbols and info-graphics and it all just sort of worked; really, the one hand use of the thing is a joy ... and the physical buttons along the side are *so* useful.
Another thing that annoyed me about the S:flo 2 functionality is the fact that it's "random" play would frequently, from session to session, play the same songs here and there, randomly. Like no matter when I started the listening session ... it's like the random play algorhythm would seem to always feature one or two songs or a series of the same which, obviously wasn't very random ... with the J3, the random play function seems to be truly random, playing a much more truly disassociated grouping of songs from my sum total library each time I start a new session. Being somebody who listens 85% of the time via random play, this is another HUGELY pleasing change .... I have so much music from so many differing genres that generally I prefer random play of "ALL" files as I like them all and want to hear the diversity...
A great player for sure. I've often read of Cowons near obsessive tendency to dote over interface and function in their devices and as a user interface designer myself (software), I can honestly say this is something that shines through ...
I also like the Jet Effects and BBE, even though it's something I don't normally use. Still, very fun to play with and explore and they actually sound more like hardware DSP than your typical software DSP (which I personally can't stand) ... the EQ is also very nice in function and also in sound quality ... as I understand it, the EQ function *is* indeed a function of the J3's DAC, that is .. a hardware managed circuit as opposed to software ... another plus in my book. My Shure SE535's benefit big time from a small uptick in both the extreme low and high frequency ranges...not much...maybe a setting of "3" at either extreme and the tonal affectation is very clean and solid ... something you just can't do with software circuits. I used an Arrow amp (gen 3) with it's supremely good/clean bass boost circuit to achieve this with my S:flo 2 but the J3 sort of makes an external amp unnecessary for such functions ...
Few questions:
1. Is there a way to use custom interfaces with the J3 and where can I find a source for such if so. Do most J3 users recommend trying custom interfaces?
2. Is the battery easily replaceable?
3. Anybody heard any thing regarding 64gb micro cards?
...
Rock.

1) theres a whole sub-forum over on anythingbuipod dedicated to custom skins/user interfaces for the J3. I've only had mine for about 2 weeks so I haven't gotten to experiment with other types of UI's as of yet
2) I've no idea as regards to the battery, but it does seem like it might be rather difficult
3) i'm pretty sure I heard over on the ABI forums that only cards up to 32Gb were supported, but again, don't quote me on that. ABI is a great resource for all things J3.
