Bluray-fi - Page 3

I have a Sony BDP-S760. It's my first Blu Ray player and my goal when I set out to buy it was "what can I get that isn't entry level, but doesn't break the bank, picture quality being the priority." I was swayed by the official AV Forums review, and the understanding that it competed well with more expensive players due to sharing some similar parts.

I think I did pretty well. I got it on clearance as it's 'last year's model' and the place I bought it from made the DVD player region-free, which was awesome. It upscales nicely, although some material tends to look better than others (I can't help but want to buy all the Pixar films again on BD)! It's hooked up via a 5m swivel-head HDMI cable to me wall-mounted Samsung LE40B650 - my first HDTV and also a "quality on a budget" buy. Currently only listening via the TV speakers, but a future goal is obviously to hook the thing up to a decent surround set up once it's no longer in an upstairs bedroom (right now I don't have the space, can't get away with the bass!).

Hilariously, I haven't got round to buying any Blu Rays up till now, but I have Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut coming in from Amazon USA, which will be my first. Rest assured my Amazon UK 'saved to buy later' basket is overflowing though!

How does a blu ray do as a cd player? I have the Sony BX1... would it play CDs better than, say a computer cd drive (sq wise) when hooked up to a receiver and speakers?

I use a PS3 (fat) 60GB.  I have two of them and I am happy with them.

Star Trek and Sunshine are amazing on BluRay if that helps.  Don't watch the whole trailer if you want to keep as much in the dark as possible.

I have a Sony PS3 in the living room and a Pioneer BDP-51FD

The Pioneer is a perfectly decent Profile 1.1 player with an interesting feature set but the load times are quite slow.  I got it as an open box unit for a price I couldn't pass up.  I couldn't actually recommend it since it doesn't have the latest features like BD-Live.

Fear not! Since that was posted I've managed to build up a small collection. Since I'm a tight arse though I've generally only been buying them when they drop to £10-11 on Amazon or Play. Things like Star Trek are still £17-18 on there, so I'm just sitting it out until they're cheap.  One thing I will say is that all the available Pixar films I've bought so far look sooooo good and it's annoying that both Finding Nemo and The Incredibles aren't available yet. Hurry up Disney/Pixar!

Same.

Any movies you guys recommend? Haven't picked one up in a while.

Ones that have excellent PQ and are great films:

Baraka

Planet Earth

Black Hawk Down

Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut

Dark Knight

...

Have heard The Fifth Element remastered is pretty top notch, anyone have it?

If it hasn't been mentioned before, I highly recommend checking out blu-ray.com to check out prices and reviews.  They also have a handy price tracker.

I've been enjoying my Oppo BDP-83SE for awhile.  It double duties SACD and Blu-Ray playback.

My sony bdp-bx1 recently crapped out on me frown.gif. Apparently either a lens or blu-ray drive motor problem, as it continually says "no disc" no matter what kind of disc I insert. Very disappointing to me, as I was just finishing perfecting a budget "home theater experience". Not alot of options that I can find, either dish out the moola for a new one (don't have it) or pay the same amount for sony to fix this one. Now I'm looking into selling/ trading my xbox 360 to get a ps3 (as it seems to be the best budget blu ray player). If any one is interested drop me a pm, or if you know anyplace that can fix blu ray players for a reasonable price, please let me know.

My Bluray player is pretty much a PS3 Slim. Used to have the original PS3 Fat 60GB for over 2 years before it YLOD'd on me. Stuck with a 250GB Slim ever since.

Enjoying my PS3 as a blu-ray player with a DAC connected so I can use my headphones or 2 channel speakers.

Hopefully someday I will be able to upgrade to 5 channel =/.
