As a USB cable transporting power to the HiFace is going to degrade SQ by interfering with data (sound) on the same cable, what would you recommend when not using your modded usb cable and external 5V PS?
I mean, quality wise, external 3.3V PS improves SQ but internal 5V with extension cable degrades it. Thus, should one go with shielded USB cable or maybe any shortest USB cable? What do you think?

That is just a premise, I don't know if it's true yet; after-all the USB signalling is differential (D+/D-) so any common noise on the D+ & D- should be mostly removed by the USB receiver.

I'm not really sure what to advise you but remember it's not that significant in the scheme of things - the hiface 3.3V mods count for 90-95% improvement & the 5V the rest. All I know is I wouldn't spend big money on "audiophile" USB cables - remember you can always add-on the external 5V mod at a later stage, maybe in conjunction with galvanic isolation if it proves to be worthwhile.

Ok, wise advice you gave me. I'm waiting for slim's usb cable stuff review also but I may send you my HiFace in the next few weeks at the max for a mod.

Just to let everybody know - I'm not doing any work on the hiface week beginning 10th May.
Do you stop permanently or do you have other business to do temporarily?
No, sorry I wasn't clear - just stopped fro that week

Hah, I feel better now

Will the 1 week break affect the already ordered mods? Or will they be done & shipped by then?

I'm getting anxious to get my hand on the new&improved HiFace

Hi Guys!

I have few questions for you, especially for Jkeny ;)

1. Does hiface work without power pins connected in USB cable? I bought external USB devices charger (~5.2 V, 1A). Could it work with hiface?

2. If the answer for my first question is YES, then is it possible to get that kind of cable from you? Only data stream, no power via USB. I believe it degrades SQ

Cheers,

Marcin

Marcin,

The Hiface needs a 5V power supply to power the SPDIF chip. I provide a modified USB cable that allows you to use an external 5V PS instead of the usually dirty 5V supply coming from the PC via a standard USB cable. The external 5V enters my USB cable right at the Hiface so it doesn't get a chance to degrade the SQ

Is it DIY cable or can I buy one somewhere on the web?

Some happy users from a recent batch of modified Hifaces that went out recently:

Some time ago jkeny offered a couple of his modified Hiface units to pfm members on a try before you buy trial basis. As a user of the std Hiface I decided to take him up on his offer. The modified Hiface arrived yesterday and consists of the modded unit and batteries all housed in a small black plastic box, there is a on/off switch and a small socket for recharging the batteries. The unit fits snuggly up to the usb port of my Macbook without the need for any usb extension cables.
On firing up the unit it was apparent that there was a step up in sound quality over the std unit. Bass is deeper and more natural and also more textured allowing you to hear more of what is going on in the mix and allowing one to hear subtle details which have been previously hidden, its like a veil has been lifted from the sound. There is no hint of any digital glare in fact this is the most "analogue" my system has sounded using a digital front end.
I have only got a few hours listening under my belt but I will be keeping the modded unit.
My front end is Macbook/iTunes/Pure Music into Chevron Audio Paradox 8i dac.
I have no connection with jkeny apart from reading about his mods on various forums.

On my system I preferred the std Hiface to the optical out on the Mac and via usb into my dac which has a usb input, its not night and day but worth it imho. The modified Hiface is a big jump in quality over the optical out of my Mac this is playing back std cds ripped to AIFF via iTunes/Pure Music.
This is my opinion of course others may beg to differ.

Another user emailed me this & gave me permission to post it:

The "system" is XP Home stationary PC - Locus Axis USB cable - boxed modded HiFace - Hegel HD10 24/192 DAC - MK Sound 1601 active loudspeakers.

What I am hearing now at my desk is easily the equal of the £30,000 worth of gear upstairs in my main stereo system - absolutely brilliant.

Bass extension and clarity are scary good.

Reference Recordings HRx 24/176 sample tracks redefine high resolution. Now I've got to get more 24/176 and 24/192 material!

Your package arrived yesterday. I’m not just satisfied, I’m shocked. I’m hearing more detail, far greater clarity. Greater realism. Tighter bass. I can listen at higher volume levels without unbearable digititis. I don’t know how else to explain it.
