Audiocubes still sells the MDR-F1's

If you run the F1's straight off a dap, then yeah, its gonna sound bright and thin. LISTEN TO ME, I have 3 pairs of these bad boys (I only remember buying 2, no clue where the hell the third pair came from)
1st, If you wanna use em portable you will need a portable amp, and a DAP with a customizable EQ (I recommend a Cowon S9, or most of the Sony Walkman line) but considering they are the most open headphones you'll ever run into, I'd avoid using them outside.
2nd, if you want to use them at home, I STRONGLY recommend a powerful sound card, the Asus Xonar line is good, but if you wanna go cheap go for the older creative Audigy 2zs line, (try the pro or platinum pro) you'll want to try and avoid the X-fi stuff, Use DFX audio enhancers (MP3 Accessories, iPod Accessories, Audio Enhancers, and Sound Enhancement Accessory Products - FXsound.com) for your media playing programs instead, they work better. You can buy an amp if you'd like, but the sound card should make them sing (mine does) The MDR-F1's eats HD595's and craps cx300's (But the HD650's do everything the F1's do, better)

would the headroom total airheads be a good enough amp for them ?

Headroom Total Airhead - Headphone Amplifier | HeadRoom Audio

or anyone have any suggestions for a portable amp ? I got about 100$ to spend

Why do you still want a portable amp?
To be honest I don't want to suggest to you anything I haven't personally tried (I tried it with a RSA SR-71, I don't think you want to go that far) , but I DO NOT RECOMMEND taking the F1's outside. I just wanted you to know what I would use if I took mine out. As for a ~$100 amp, I've ordered the Fiio E7, but it is back ordered for 2 weeks, and it will take a week or two for it to reach me when they do ship it so It'll be about a month before I can give you an answer, I know the E7 works good with the HD650's however.

How many people have an F1? There is a reason why some call it a 'sleeper.'

OK thanks for the help all - I decided to get a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-ES7. I heard that there an excellent set for portables and an amp is not required so much. I still plan on getting an amp, gonna wait till the e7 (that thing looks sick) Thanks again for the imput !

I'm sure the ES7 will be great. Btw, this post maybe of your interest:

Maybe a Concerto is way too expensive for you now, but keep your phones for the future. It might surprise you.

The F1 is a great gaming headphone if you can live with the lack of isolation.
It has a pretty wide soundstage and directional effects are very well represented.
I use the F1 for late night frag sessions when I want to kill loud but not bother the better half or the neighbours.

Oh and yeah, it's pretty damn fine with music too

^what he said, The x will run them, but IMO they sounded a little thin, Which is why i suggest the amp. but they sound their best with a sound card or stationary amp. (IMO)

Thanks for the input!

I thought the X is supposed to be a warm DAP...So the X can drive them to audible level, but couldn't pull out all the potential of F1

Are they comparable to the sound of K1000? do they still have the same transparency and imaging?
Haven't tried the K1000's so I cannot say.
I don't know what it is about the F1's but they need a descent amount of juice to have the bass and treble where they need to be. I've read it's something about the impedance, personally I just use mine with my computer and they are AWESOME, no complaints. But I've ordered a few cheap amps of my own and I should have the LISA III XP in three weeks, and that should run them very well. Then I can truly experiment, and I'll get back to you guys.
