Weight, balanced and detailed.
That's what i've been saying all the time;

amp it well, have a rig up to notch and you will be rewarded!

But doesn't that go for the majority of headphones?!

Excuse me, may I ask how is the synergy between your new K701 and new C2 amp?
I'am loving every bit of it mate,they are everything I had expected them to be, the acoustic sounds so live, to some extent its a little bit hard on the ears especially listening to live recordings.
I set the gain on high for C-2 couldn't move the volume above 9:30, low gain performs similar at about 2:00pm but there is some charm missing, therefore high gain really does it, makes every string play

I went from the HD 650 to the ATH W5000 and could not be happier. I may buy the 701 one day and balance them just to see what the AKG sound is like. There are so many good headphones out there that it is just hard to try them all due to the money issue. LOL. I would love to hear the HD 800 or the Edition 8 one day.

I think you will find the 600 and 650 more natural sounding and also they will sound "closer" to whatever it is your listening to. They are balanced and they have amazing mids that will draw you in. They will present bass weight that is absent in the 700 series AKG's and the highs will be softer and smoother than the AKG. I am not here to talk down the AKG's but I do need to say I enjoy the Sennheisers much more. I am sure you know this but the 650 will present more bass weight. I would say choose the one that suits your needs the best. If you are aiming for something more neutral then the 600 is best or if you want some bass coloration or your amp is bass deficient then surely go for the 650. The biggest plus for me when making the same move you are considering was the added comfort and complete lack of fatigue that was present in the AKG.

I seem to have turned into an icube.

From what I read here, it seems that the 702/600/650s all sound great with great sources and amps but offer something slightly different to the table. I have some money laying around.... and I'm slightly thinking about picking up some 600s to see what all the fuss is about but I'm not completely sure about that.

I do, however, love my K702s for the amount of detail I'm getting. The music just sounds natural, plain and simple. Currently waiting on my custom cable to come in. I might go ahead and get the Blue Dragon one for classical music :)

You guys should really give nikchen's modded MS-Pro's a try. The MS-Pro as some might know, is a more tame version of the RS-1 (I speculate, never heard the RS-1). Add liberators with gs-1000 pads and you have the MS-Ultimate. This fellow has a very big soundstage, though lacking the vertical stage which the k701's excel in. They have that body which is sometimes missed by the k701, and have slam... which is missing from the k701's almost all-together. They also posses a very cohesive sound, which is normal for most phones (in my experience to say the least) but absent in the K701. To me, the AKG almost is akin to a componenet speaker system, the treble seems to be separate on its own somewhere. Detail on the MS-Ultimate is atleast on par with the k701. It also has that trademark grado emotion/aggressiveness sprinkled in.

This might come across as k701 bashing, but alas I love my K701's. They lack slam but possess depth in the lower frequencies that I didn't hear neither in my HD-6000 or my Denon AH-D2000. Yes, the AKG will go lower. The mid frequencies, in my system, are very smooth and lush, making them a dream when listening to female vocals and just in general enjoying the textural experience of a musical piece. Indeed you wouldn't listen to electronic music for these, but put on a quality electro track and listen to the texture of the synth's with the AKG, amazing. The highs took me about a week, for my ears to get used to the AKG sound sig, after that I didn't find them at all fatiguing and can listen continuously for many hours. Indeed whether exaggerated or not the K701 provides a very clean and resolving listening experience.

The MS-Ultimate is most definitely worth checking out if you liked the K701 but wanted a bit more bass, body, or a more cohesive sound. And most importantly wanted that slam back

IMO HD650 is an upgrade from k702.  When you transition from k702 to HD650, it would be a significant change, you will notice that 650 is not as bright sounding.  If you amp HD650 properly you will notice how well it represents music, it is very accurate.  I realized that my k701 is really unnatural being overly bright, and since it is that way, its not that choosy when it comes to amping, but HD650 demands the right amp to really shine.  I don't listen to my k701 anymore.

^ I'm really thinking about picking up a desktop amp to use at home. The K702s scale nicely and I know making the move to a desktop amp will take me to the next level in SQ. I can't wait.
