K702 to HD650s. Is it worth it?

Is it worth upgrading to the HD650s from the K702? For any purpose I shall add.

What do you guys think? Is it a big/smart upgrade or should I stick with my K702?

they are really two different cans. I am sure there are others who can explain better then me. but they are both so totally different.

lol, You downgrade from K-702 to 650.

I wouldn't consider it an 'upgrade'. I think they compliment each other well, and I own both. I listen to a lot of classical music, and prefer the K701s with solo piano in particular, but wouldn't want them as my only headphones, unless my music was all perfectly recorded - even then, the treble would be a little bright for me for long listening sessions.

The HD650 sound is completely different sounding, with a somewhat smaller soundstage, a warmer sound, stronger/deeper bass, and they are very non-fatiguing to listen to for hours at a time. Their sound signature reminds me a lot of some floor-standing British speakers I grew up with - Tannoy Monitor Reds.

You should read all the threads on both headphones, but the amp. you are using and the types of music you listen to would be helpful for people to know before making a recommendation.

I listen to everything... I don't listen to jazz, classical or such though. that's why i was wondering if it'll be a good upgrade or is the sound/soundstage just better on the k702? I know you said they're two completely different sounding cans, but one has to stand out with sound quality. I want one that can stand out in sound quality for basically everything and I was thinking that the 650s might do better in that category than the k702.

Confirmed^

IMO, it would be a sidegrade, just a different sound style.

What amplifier are you using with your K701s?

i'm kinda in the same boat.
i have the k702 for one flavor. and a dt990 for another flavor.
still looking for that perfect phone for rock/metal.
one day... it'll be grado rs1, prob.
but, the hd650 always calls out to me.

If you hang around these forums enough, you'll start to notice that there are plenty of people who prefer the 702 over the 650; yet, there is basically an equal number of people whose preferences are the other way around.

If you listen to "everything", but not jazz or classical (which the 702 excels at), you might want to give the 650 a try, since they are considered warmer, darker, and less fatiguing all around. The reason for this is because on some recordings, the treble on the 702 can sound a little "hot", and thus might sound unpleasant. If you are currently happy with the 702 though, the 650 should be a good complement, as Ridleyguy has already mentioned; and there's no reason not to own and enjoy both (unless it is a money issue, of course).

Search the forums and read around. These two are some of the most talked about headphones here.

Well I got a pretty good deal from JandR on the 650s...I got mine for $348 tax included after $320.

What's the deal? Shall I go with them and put down my K702? If you say that the focal point of the K702 is for jazz and classical, but for the 650 is rock, metal, hip-hop, rap, and a bit of everything then I mind as well go with the 650s.

The reason why I don't want to purchase the 650s and keep my K702 is pretty much the money. I want to invest a good $200+ on a pair and use them for life! Then hook them up with a nice AMP and such and in the future I could probably upgrade.

I've had both (well, the K701, which was rebel-alliance white instead of Darth-Vader black). I liked both headphones very much, found both very comfortable, liked the bass on the 650 better, liked the crispness of the K701 better - and sold them both before moving on to the HF2. If I had to pick one or the other, I'd go with the K701, but just know that it needs a good amp in order to balance out the HF with some solid bass. That's the weakness of any open-air phone. The 650 gets around the problem by using filters to attenuate the HF. I felt like the 650, in all its laid-back glory, missed opportunities to engage me. I didn't like the amount of filtering between my ears and the drivers, at least not as much as the fairly open relationship on the K701. Both of these headphones need an amp, but the K70X needs an amp, and a better amp, more than the 650.

Some people hate the K70X. They find it shrill. They think its soundstage is artificially grandiose. They have other objections that make me yawn. I prefer my Grados, but I respect both of these headphones for what each does right. If I had to pick one, I'd go with the K701 in a heartbeat. That's no diss on the 650. I just like the K701 better.

They are on the same quality level. Buy from JR or other retailers with good return policy and compare them yourself.

Yes the 650 are downgrade, if they don't do nothing better then the K702... the 650 are dark and valid compare to the 701/2, they can be okay only if you have problem with the 702's highs. Or you have some crazy powerful tube that not relay fit well with the 701/2.
