Sennheiser MX 980 Expression

Just got my MX 980 and I thought to share some pictures and thoughts with you.
First of all, the package is stunning, it really feels like high-end. You can see in the upper left corner the hologram, and on the left earbud there is a serial number engraved. Not printed, but engraved. I am not aware of any fakes on the market, but just to clear things up.





The sound is...Sennheiser. It reminds me a little of the CX 870 I had, but the details are much, much more precise, the soundstage better, and the overall sound warm, pleasant and I don't know...somehow very relaxing. Anyway, clearly another league compared to CX 300, 400, 500 and the like.

I also have the HD 595. After few listening sessions, I can say I like the MX 980 as much, the bass seems to be more accurate and precise, and the details finer, however the soundstage and the overall feeling on HD 595 are better. But the highs on MX 980 are extremely well emphasized, I really think that I found the highs I was looking for.
I'm not sure, but it seems that MX / CX 980 use different drivers than the MX / CX 870 / 880, I mean newer drivers. This would explain the price difference. On my beloved discman D-33 the sound is just stunning, I can't stop listening, I feel like listening to all my CDs again.

How is the fit? They look very awkward and too long. Is that just a perception from the pictures?

The fit is just perfect. I really don't find anything particular against it. You forget you have them in your ears. But I agree they might look a little awkward.

Thanks for the impressions. Do you find the weight (being metal) a issue and do you hear any noise form the cable touching together or anything else?

The weight is really not an issue and in what concerns the sound from the cable touching your body, I must say that after the CX 870 experience (the CX 870 suffers badly, but really badly from this), this was a relief: you don't get more sound from MX 980' cable touches than from any other earbuds. You really don't notice it. The cable is much more flexible and smooth compared to the obnoxious cable of CX 870 that made you ears pumping with each touch.

Actually, now that I’m thinking of it, I’m not sure if this cable touches sound is not related more to the fact that CX 870 had rubber ear pads, while the MX 980 has foam ear pads….I mean, I’m not sure if this is a cable issue or an ear pad issue...

Good question! Well, it depends…although the build quality really makes a difference, I wouldn't give more than a $ 100 for this SQ.

What you described with CX870 is microphonics, a problem unique to IEM. MX980, or any earbuds will not have that problem.
