Having an appointment with a local attorney and knowing how the local courts rule on such matters are two completely different things. Most lawyers are dishonest by nature and will try and sell you legal services that are not necessary.

My first concern would be paying my Parents back the money I owe them plus interest.

let's try not to "throw" legal ideas around...what if people (not necessary OP) actually relied on those

Please, please cling to that notion.

My experience has been that the price paid in legal fees is well worth it.

This is untrue, my uncle is a lawyer and the key success to a lawyer is his/her reputation, this is the last thing any lawyer would want to do.

Yeah because they deal with thousands of meaningless and idiotic lawsuits each and every year... I don't know of any other country where people go so crazy suing people.

They even go so far as to sue because they made a personal mistake, and want money because they were stupid and hurt themselves. I recognize not ONLY Americans are doing this, but is definitely rampant in their country, which is why the "justice" system in the U.S. is largely a joke.

Justice Is Lost
Justice Is Raped
Justice Is Gone
Pulling Your Strings
Justice Is Done
Seeking No Truth
Winning Is All

So True
So Real

A good bit of this is a media fiction. The media blows one case out of proportion and treats it as representative of lawsuits in general, or fails to report all the facts.

Remember that McDonald's coffee lawsuit? The lady didn't get millions like everyone thinks. She settled for not much above her medical bills after attorney fees were added in.

However, you do get more lawsuits in the U.S. because we do not charge losing plaintiffs for the attorney fees of the other side. This has good and bad aspects. On one hand, it means you can sue a large corporation who had genuinely wronged you without a potentially massive bill on your hands. On the other hand, there are occasionally suits with less merits.

OP, make an appointment to see/speak w/ an attorney to get the facts as they pertain to your area. The fact your parents are concerned should be a "raised flag" to you. Good luck.
