Hey everyone, whether you have a Verizon phone or not, you'll want to read this nightmare story about roaming charges. It pretty much relates to anyone who uses their phone a lot and travels. Be careful using your phone...and beware of Verizon! http://snydeysense.com/2010/04/13/ve...ing-nightmare/

Agreed. To quote part of the beginning of his sob story:

He informed me as I got ready to go that the data would come in at 2 cents a kilobyte. I was thinking to myself: Wait… What the hell does that mean?!
Well derp, looks like he should have looked up how much a kilobyte was before he went ahead and did such careless things!

I agree, they told him the cost of the data, it's very much his fault for not looking up how much he typically uses.

Additionally, I don't think Verizon did anything here that any other cellular service company would do differently.

All American cell companies do this (to my knowledge), this isn't exclusive to Verizon. Never use data abroad or near the Canadian and Mexican borders.

How is this guy involved in two tech businesses and unfamiliar with a kilobyte? Even if someone isn't tech savvy, surely they come across typical file sizes for different media just by using stuff like MP3 players, digital cameras, etc?

Thankfully I've been able to use my cellphone at my cottage which is on an island right between the US and Canadian border without roaming fees. Full bars there too!

I agree with the previous posters... This guy is complaining about something that would take all of two seconds to do the math for or just slightly longer to Google. Whether these roaming rates and data rates in general are fair or not is a whole different discussion, but he was told what he would be paying and definitely had the option to make sure he understood what he was told but he didn't.

I agree with the rest of you and this isn't just american companies, it's exactly the same over here. It never ceases to amaze me when I read about some idiot in the paper that crosses the border to norway to go fishing and then thinks it would be a good idea to watch the hockey world cup on his laptop using a 3G modem. Then he goes crying to the newspapers when he gets a bill for 8000€

I do however think that cellphone service providers could be better at informing people of costs when you leave your country's borders, just by a simple text message or whatever.

well that chap clearly is to blame, they told him how much it was going to be
