need a new mp3 4gb+ size $150

Hi,
I have the ipod nano 3rd gen 4gb atm and its full so I think its time for an upgrade. I mainly listen to Rock, Metal, Techno, Screamo and Emo and i love my bass. My earphones are the metrofi 220 buts might get the RE0 and my own diy cmoy (gain 2).

I've been looking at the clip+, fuze and s:flo2.
The clip+ looks good but the rockbox site says its not stable, fuze is good as it can play videos but rockbox is only on v1 and s:flo2 looks very nice but has a buggy firmware. Can the s:flo2 play mkv x264 soft subbed videos eg anime?

I also use itunes for all my music what program would you recommend getting if i get the a new mp3.

I also live in Australia so are there any good internet stores to order the mp3 from?

I was also thinking just get a ipod lod from ebay and just waiting till some new things come out in the market.

Thanks

Oh yes Australia. Getting anything here is a pain believe me.

Sandisk doesn't sell the Clip+ so you have to get it from overseas. (Eg. Ebay or mp3outlet.com). Also the original firmware is more than decent if you don't want to endlessly tinker with EQ settings and play around with an unstable version of Rockbox.
It sounds like you would like to have the ability to watch videos? If so you may wish to invest some time researching more into the Fuze. I know next to nothing much about it.
The s:flo2 is a amazing sounding player but as a step up from your Nano the firmware "issues" as well as the short battery life and loss of tactile buttons will be massive slap in the face.
Have you considered Cowon's? I have found them a perfect stepping stone away from my old iPod. Decent firmware, long battery life and good audio quality. It's out of your budget perhaps but the D2+, s9 or the new JH3 (Still getting released around the world) all have great audio quality and the ability to play videos when desired.
Also why a 4gb+ player? 4gb seems somewhat small for a audio player these days... especially when considering using it for video. I'm simply interested.

As far as a new player goes many people have great success with Foobar2k which is free. I personally use J River Media Center and can't see myself ever changing, but it costs $50 to get a license code.

Plus, I don't think the RE0's are for you if you like your bass. Have a look at the Hippo VB... or some other more bassy 'phones (Mental blanking at the moment).

Oh and lastly, getting a LOD for your iPod is only any use if you plan on getting a portable headphone amp. You realize this right?

Hope I helped in some form. Good to see fellow Australians about on these forums.

Get a Fuze from eBay, have a dialogue with the seller. Most will be very good about telling you the firmware version. Some will even send the player already Rockboxed.

Used iTunes once. Utter f***ing nightmare. I get used CDs, archive in FLAC, and resell. I get to deal with humans, and if they don't have what I need, they know who will, or they know who knows.

I rip in EAC, convert to mp3@320 with dbPowerAmp Free, do the tags in Foobar2000. All free software, including the Lame (mp3) and FLAC codecs.

Unless I can snatch an iMod for cheap on the forums, I won't even begin to consider getting an iPod.

I might go with the clip+ is the eq anygood in it just for boosting bass?
will the rockbox for it become stable later down the road?
and does the clip+ and cmoy amp play well together?

I haven't heard anything bad about it. I personally bought my Clip+ from an international ebay site. To be more specific this one. SanDisk 8GB Sansa® Clip Plus MP3 Player (Black) Hot!! - eBay, iPod MP3 Players, Electronics. (end time 18-Apr-10 18:32:04 AEST)
As for hearing a difference with FLAC and mp3. It depends on your ears. When you get the player do some blind tests to determine for yourself.
It's easy to have your music software to convert higher bitrate files on the go to mp3's or something similar if you want to later down the track. Aka, you don't need multiple libraries of multiple copies of FLAC songs and mp3 versions.

Look for the Sony E or S Series players, as 16gb of damn fine SQ can be had for under $150.00, often times under $100.00.

I would go with the s:flo2 if you want the best sound quality. A second pick would be the clip+ as I love the sound on that too; could use a small boost in power though :/

The version 2.00 firmware on the s:flo2 isn't really as buggy as many say it is; I've been using it for about 2 months now and it only froze on me 3 times and i use it at least 3 hours a day.

The UI isn't top notch but once you get used to it, it isn't that bad. I'm pleased with the player.

The reason I personally say to avid the s:flo2 is the battery life: 8-10hrs for audio is unacceptable IMO.

I wouldn't buy S:flo2 at this moment. It's six months old; it takes time to work out bugs (both hardware and software). If so unlucky, oversea warranty is never fun.

Loks like a good seller, price is about right, make your own damn decision RE shipping :P

A couple of things - when you get it, uprade your firmware (don't choose Europe as your region or you'll lose the ability to play at full-volume).
- Leave it on "High" volume mode even if you don't use it, I've been messing around and it seems to have a slight crackle in "normal' mode on certain songs that it doesn't have in "high" mode.
- Don't rockbox until it's stable unless you understand the risks (and the fact that atm, you can't write to the player from within the new OS, so you have to fiddle around a bit to get your settings/playlists/etc right)

And of course get yourself a microSD card
