Little Dot MK VII+ paired with a HD 800? - Page 2

That's one thing about little dot amps. They are not world class amps but most of their amps are really good at being over-achievers. Little dot amps will give you a very good mid-fi system for very little money. Well fortunately there are quiet a few amps good at doing that now. This is a very good time to be in headfi right now. There use to be a lot of people who had one or two systems at one time. With the performance coming out of these "value" products right now, one could have mulitple headfi system with each one sounding excellent. Well sorry to get of topic. So, yes the MKVII+ would sound good with an HD800. I thought they sounded fine on the one I used to have. 9:30-10:00 on the volume knob was all they needed.

It's the VI (a tube amp!) that has heating issues.

The VII and VII+ (both SS) are different beasts

Its just the "improvised" version of the VII, which is about its heating issue.

Don't assume that since the HD800 sits upon a $1400 pedestal that it's simply better than the HD650. A lot of people think so, and you may too, but I for one "preferred" the HD650. Like you I prefer a laid back and mellow sound, and so far I haven't found any cans that do it better than these cans.

The HD800s were simply too bright for me. If they didn't have a treble spike I probably would've liked them a lot more, but no dice. It could have been a synergy problem with my gear, but I doubt it.

I too like the laid back nature of the hd650s, although I think its a bit of a mess from the mid bass down in terms of overall performance.

If you are expecting something like the 650 but more, look somewhere else, if anything its more similar to the k701.

the MKIII will always be a winner in my book in terms of price/performance.

My VII drives my K1000's with ease at the 10-10.30 position, and that is on low gain.

This is a very powerful amp. Only 9:00 on my very hard to drive he-5s. Nothing else I've owned has come even close to driving them that well. Although some of the amps I've owned have sounded a little better, none them could drive them as well. This amp will easily drive any can you throw at it and(don't know about the original mkvii) is pretty quiet even with iems. It's one of the amps I regret selling. Just can't get over my obsession over tubes.

Just received my ld mk vii+,

what a great improvement over my previous amp, the audiotrak imAmp.

the depth, the bass impact, the soundstage, the texture are a notch higher.

its driving the k701 at a satisfactory volume at 1 o'clock, denon d5k at 9 o'clock

cant wait to balanced my setup =X

I use a number on amps on my Sennheiser HD800's.  Little Dot III  sounds pretty good with them, but my favorite amp with them is the Bottlehead Crack amp (with Speedball upgrade).  Sounds great.

I had HD650's but I sold them. They always sounded dark to me, veiled. The HD800's are completely different. They sound sort of bright, where the HD650's sounded dark.  The HD800s are not "tizzy" or "screechy" - they just present a lot more high frequency stuff to the listener than the HD650's did.

Also, the bass on the HD800's sounds less "strained" than the bass of the HD650 to me.  They go deep and are very musical in the bass, so they have great bass but the real "show" that the HD800's put on is in the mids and highs, there is endless detail and there is a real feeling of listening to a real acoustic space.

Imaging, people talk of imaging with headphones.  I guess I'm spoiled by my Magneplanar 3.6's, which image very well. Headphones just DON'T image at all IMHO.  The sound is all in your head. When you move your head in a speaker soundfield, or at a concert, you get a changing acoustic panorama - the motions of your ears in the soundfield build up a sonic "picture" in your brain.  With headphones, the sound left-right relative phase & timing, etc all stays exactly the same no matter how you move your head.  So, although there is a stereo EFFECT with headphones, the overall experience isn't ANYTHING like a stereo "image" from a good pair of speakers, or a real concert hall.
