Just did a search on ebay for IE8 cable, and came up with this from the seller ecbuyonline2008... I've bought a LO cable from them for my Sony X, it's great, and service/shipping was super fast. Wonder what the quality of this cable is like... It is a bit pricey for an overseas cable, but it's tempting.

Holy shit!! So I searched out of curiosity and this one is $250 bones for a replacement cable on http://www.whiplashaudio.com/elite-sennheiser-ie8-replacemnt-cable.html

You can buy a whole new set of earphones for that money or go with custom molds, are they out of their minds? I wonder if anyone nuts enough who bought one from them.

Considering that whiplash cables are well received by many users here on head-fi, I don't find that price point surprising. I am pretty sure that cable has the same quality as the cable with terminations for a custom IEM, which costs just $25 more. So considering that the same quality cable is used, the fact that it is attached to a universal IEM should not mean that the price should be less.

 

Does it make sense or is it logical to purchase such a cable for a universal IEM like the IE8? That's entirely another question.

I am really curious about many of these cables, Also if ALO or other copmanies could custom make some cables, I do find these cables very interesting and might get them eventually because the prices look right.

cn11 how do you like those cables? those were some of the first ones I found. Have they burned in any more? Also have you tried burning it in with burn in discs like Isotek or Densen Demagic? Or anything like those? I am really interested in OCC copper because I hear in some cases it is basically an OhNo copper which is some of the best copper you can buy. Audience cables uses Ohno and they make some of the best audio cables I have heard, If someone could make an cable for the Senns like that I am sure it would be well worth it. although the 4th and 5th links to me look the most interesting and highest quality for the money. I wonder if someone has bought those and tested them on the forum.

Unfortunately I don't really have any further burn in reports since I honestly haven't been using the IE8's very much these days, with the purchases of the SM3 & Sony EX1000 over the last year and a half. I used the Senns with the new cable for about a week, and was pretty impressed with the level of change I heard with a reasonably priced cable. Not too shabby.

cn11 the EX1000 looks like a very good IEM. Can you upgrade the cable on them? I think this IEM is the only one with a frequency range that goes past 20k. I know it has a midrange hump around 5k how do these sound compared to the Senns? Oh and do you know if they sound harsh when listening to heavier music like heavy metal?

Thanks for the review, good to know they bring in a slight sound improvement. Does the cable feel sturdier than the factory one?

Yes, definitely. It's thicker, and stiffer (which is a bit of a detriment I think, in user friendliness). The connectors fit very well too, so there's no worry about breaking or bending the pins if you swap back and forth a few times with the orig cables (which I did to get a handle on the sound differences).

I don't think at this point it's possible to upgrade the EX1000's cable. The connectors are highly proprietary, with this threaded sleeve which locks it down. And the socket has a notch so that the cable end has to line up in one position. It was a bit tricky to get the cable ends back on right the first time I tried it. I hope someone does do up an upgrade cable at some point, but I bet there would be high development costs in getting that locking mechanism just right. 

 

Sonically I think they do borderline on harsh sometimes. But it's rare in occurrence, and only on music in my collection which has the absolute worst harsness/sibilance. Most times they're awesome for heavy metal/hard rock. Tool is very, very good through them! To my ears they represent a logical step up from the IE8's, although they don't have nearly the mid bass bloom that the Senns do. If you prefer the IE8's heavy, thick bass quality, the speedy and detailed bass of the EX1000's could potentially be a little on the light side (I do like to tick up the clear bass on my Sony X1060 to +1 with them). That said, their bass compares pretty evenly to the Monster Coppers, so it's really not all that light!   biggrin.gif
