HD650 or other suggestions? - Page 3

If you have done your research and desire to purchase the HD650, then congrats - I do agree with the consensus of needing a good amp. Otherwise you may consider D2000's which don't seem to improve as much with an amp.

Add to that a HD650 and you'll en up at $810.

I have both the GCHA and the HD650 and am very happy with it.
For classical I use the HD800, but when I listen to rock I enjoy the HD650 more (and the D7000, but these are pricier and closed, a different sound alltogether).
I have never used the built in Dac, so I can't comment on that but from reading around it should be of good quality.
If you upgrade to a better Dac later on, you'll still have a really good amp.
The GCHA has some nice reviews here on Head-Fi and check out the review on 6 Moons too.
6moons audio reviews: PS Audio GCHA
It seems tempting but I'm wondering if it would be better than my DacMagic>GLite setup which drives the 650 exceptionally well also.

If I remember it right I have read people referencing to the GS-1 in some threads about the GCHA.
I couldn't find all I needed doing a search inside Head-Fi, but I found doing a google search directed me to Head-Fi pages I couldn't find using the search here. I'm sorry but I really don't know the search terms I used anymore.
I never heard the Gilmore Lite nor GS-1, so I can't comment on that myself.

On another note, I just received a Little Dot MkIII this afternoon and just played around with it a bit after finding the right gain setting and letting it warm up. I bought this as my first tube-amp experiment to see if I like it or not.
One thing I can tell you straight away is that it definately can't compare to the sheer power and control of the GCHA. But at 200$ you can't expect it to either. Remember that the GCHA isn't really a 500$ amp but a 1000$ one. And the reviews you read where done when it was sold at 1000$.

Anyway, I don't want to push you into buying a GCHA, just want to share my experience with it and hope it's of any use to you, be it in favor of the GCHA or not. It's not the last amp I will have bought, I'm sure some more will follow but I do think it's a keeper.

The HD 650 is a fine headphone for sure. It does sound better with a good amp and DAC but there are so many to choose from. I am happy with the Audio GD ROC and am awaiting the Reference 5 to complete it. I would have been happy for along time with the HD 650 but I heard the ATH W5000 and fell in love. I wish I lived where they had meets so I could get other flavors as well. If they have one in your area attend it and then you can sample what other people are using and get a better idea. This hobby is expensive but may not have to bee depending on your level of satisfaction. I am done now and spending my money on music to enjoy the equipment. I think I have found by spot to stop for a while now. Good luck in you finding yours.
